Whats an alternative to glass that I could use as my bottom piece for an aquarium?

I need to be able to silicone glass to it.

Any suggestions?

I dont think I can find a decently priced piece that measures 85" x 85" x 1/2"

I've already got all four sides. I just need a bottom.

what about tile? I have seen people use something that looks like a tile bathroom floor.

I dont know how you could do it though.

eh, i dont know about tile...

i was thinking about concrete, but dont know how well it would work.

The old Metaframe tanks used single pieces of slate as tank bottoms. I used to have several of them and they worked fine. Once silicone sealer was invented, these tanks became obsolete since the 'tar patch' used to seal the glass and slate was no longer needed (couldn't allow it to dry out. Once dried, the whole tank had to be disassembled and resealed)

Tile was used in many commercial Aquariums, Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan had beautiful displays.

You can use silicone as the adhesive and grout.

They make a river stone on a backing to use as tiles too.

While you may not be able to afford a single piece of glass that size, you should be able to afford smaller pieces of glass you can join. On larger tanks I prefer split bottoms anyway since they can handle flex a little better.

I think I like the idea of using 2 pieces of glass best.

If glass was used for the bottom and the bottom is on a completely flat surface, would thickness still be an issue?

I've got 2 4'x8' pieces that were used on a sliding door, but arent very thick at all.
