Wow nice eel! He's awesome.

Here's some pics of the shovelnose:

http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u173/Amiacuss/Picture4-2.png

My water is quite hard and full of minerals... At one point the tank had no fish in it so I just let it evaperate until it was empty rather than taking the water out... well that was a bad idea and left an ugly residue on the glass that doesn't come off :irked: I need some lime-away as you can see in these pics:

I'll take some pics of the wild O soon. :)

Thanks for the pics. Yours is young but that is the best way to get them so that you can raise them to full size. Still want to see the wild oscars.

I actually have one in the 52k but he hides a lot and is very hard to get any pics of him. I put him in the tank at 32" and he has not appeared to grow much in the 2+ years in the tank. Never see him eat any food I put in. He seems to live off cichlids he captures.

Wait, what's 32''- not the oscar right???

No that's the tiger shovelnose like yours. Sorry to confuse you.

The biggest oscar I have ever measured was 18" tl.

Personally I have never had any bigger than around 13"

Fish photographer Dave Unruh of St Catherines Ontario Canada took a few pics of fish at my place when he visited last November and gave me a cd of them today.

The Emperor/Imperial shark (Panagasius sanitswongi)
is in a 540 gallon tank (8' x 4' x 28")

arapaimag
04-10-2008, 6:13 PM
do those get huge like paroons?

They are also called paroons but in Quaoar or Canada they are known more so as Imperial sharks. They can max at 9 to 10 feet long and over 600 lbs.

I had these 3 in my 52k but had to get them out because they were attacking my arapaima's. When I've had them before I never had this problem.

It is just the personality of the different fishes.

Do you have them in the USA ?

Fish photographer Dave Unruh of St Catherines Ontario Canada took a few pics of fish at my place when he visited last November and here is a 16" Boulengerochromis microlepis in a 180.

I bought it at The Tropical Fish Room in Brantford, Ontario Canada.

The pic was taken by Dave Unruh.

04-23-2008, 12:46 PM
That is an absolutely stunning set-up you have got. I won't dare ask how much it cost, as that is none of my business, but wow...Your tank has got to be as big as my home *I live in a Mobile Home* I could just imagine turning my house into one giant aquarium...I would then be homeless though LOL
I don't know if any one has asked this, I browsed through some of the older posts, but didn't see it. How long did it take to build it?

You know...You could do tours of it! I'm sure someone has already thought of it...but hey! You could charge like a couple bucks to get in, and than save that money to build a 100,000 tank!!! :)

arapaimag
04-25-2008, 10:36 PM
I never really measured the time to build the 15k. The concrete, steel and glass went up over a couple of months. The coatings, lights, plumbing probably 2 more. It took a lot more time building the 52,000.

Hey you forgot heat. Many of us live in cold climates.

Oil went up today $6 a barrel on the july future markets so my grand total and everbody else's on this site will be going up also....................................I already see people cutting back on their hobbies because of it. This is a sad thing for us all.

I firmly believe that the the current oil market is a 'bubble market' and it will succumb to the same fate that the housing market did when it bloated a few years ago. Hang in there until that happens!

I could look at your tanks for hours...

Great, but why did You not invest little bit into some gravel layer ? 2inch where bacteria to live...

Both the 15k and 52k have swimming pool drains on the floors. That would not work with the gravel.

I have read through your threads several times and I am always impressed with what you have done with your fish. I find it inspirational to know that someone who faces the physical challenges such as yourself takes on a task of caring for so many of these beautiful creatures. it proves that if you want it you will find a way. you are a real genuine person from what I see. thank you for sharing this with us. I have 6 tanks ranging from 20G up to 250G and plan to build somethingin the range of 2-5000G but not until I get my feet back under me. I was also wondering what kind of Gar is in that tank? I couldn't back up the video to get a second look.

Thanks for the kind words. I really hope you are able to get back on your feet soon. I joined this site to encourage hobbyists to recognize the need to provide large tanks for their monster fish and to show them that if I can do it so can they.

There are so many great MonsterFishTankKeepers on this site to further entice hobbyists to build ponds & tanks and are very helpful to offer suggestions when requested.

You have a large 250g tank, so your fish are already getting very good
accommodation. Please keep us informed when you can, on your dream project.

In the summer a few hobbyists (Jeff, Scot, Richard and Michael) went into the tank to do a little maintenance and catch a few fish. The Brycons were becoming a problem when feeding the other fish so they and the barbs, were caught and placed in outdoor ponds. In time some were given away and the rest were put in the 52K in October with the help of Eric, Jeff, and Jocelyn. The Distichodus shenga, 1 Distichodus sexfaciatus, and Giraffe catfish were placed in the 52K at the time they were caught from the 15K.

When in the 15K tank Jeff and Scot also applied POR 15 rust paint to the steel support beams and cleaned the glass panels.

The water was lowered 4 feet to catch the fish and then raised as they painted and cleaned the glass.

Here is a picture of a 40" plus electric eel Jeff moved for me that day into a 540g from the 225g he was in when the pic was taken. I bought the eel in 1999 as a nine inch baby from Sean and Oliver Lucanus when they owned Biotope Imports Inc. (Oliver now owns Below Water).

In this project, I designed and built a second mini mega tank in my main fish room in my basement. It is a lot smaller but I like it very much. My mini mega tank is also L shaped. The long part of the L is 28 feet, the short part 18 feet. the front to back of the long part is 6 feet for the first six feet then widens to 10 feet, The front to back of the short part of the L is 10 feet, The tank water height is about 6 feet. It holds around 15,000 gallons.

There are a few well known hobby fish on a new list requiring permits to be brought in to Canada soon. I don't know if Canadians are aware of this new legislation

guppies
goldfish
angula angula eel
walking catfish
dwarf gourami
zebra danio
koi
glass knife fish
blue catfish
channel catfish
barramundi
chinese emperor
golden orfe
nile tilapia
giant gourami (goramy)
marble goby
rosy barb
nile perch
spotted scat
discus
archer fish
blue (3 spot) gouramie
snakeskin gouramie

also I noticed the wels catfish which I have studied for many years but never purchased because of my wallago leeri which would never allow it to live in my big tank.

If these fish require permits to bring in their prices will skyrocket. Also there is the chance that permits will be denied.

I really don't know why these restrictions are coming. I don't know of anyone dying from being infected by his guppy. Though I have met a few people I now realize suffer from mad guppy disease.

I have never actually seen the mbu attack another fish on purpose. However the cichlids do get in his way at times when eating and I'm sure he has injured some by accident.

just curious, i haven't gone thru the whole thread, but how do you catch a fish in that monster of a tank? a pool net?

Just go back to post 335 and you will see that I remove about 10,000 gallons or so and you can see 4 friends got in the tank with large nets.

We are actually going in the tank tomorrow and I have already lowered the water in anticipation. I have 7 people helping. 4 in the tank and 3 outside moving the fish to the 52,000 or holding tanks.

I refill the tank in about 1 hour by just taking a bit of water out of my big tank (the 52,000) and putting it in the 15,000.

arapaimag

Well my friends went into the tank today after I drained it down to about 20" of water
and they caught, measured and transferred to the 52,000:

2 Paratilapia aurem the smaller was 20"
the larger was 23" (1" longer than my old Parachromis dovii)
2 Pterodoras granulosus the smaller was 25 3/4"
the larger was 33" (and weighed more than 30lbs)
2 Osteoglossum bicirrhosum (South American Silver Arowana) the smaller was 36"
the larger was 38 1/2"
2 Notopterus chitala (clown knife) the smaller was 26"
the larger was 27"
1 Scleropages formosus (red tail golden asian arowana) *proposed to be changed to Scleropages aureus 28"
1 Scleropages formosus (green) * also called the Silver asian. 26"
1 Lepisosteus oculatus 34 1/2"
1 Hemibagrus wyckii 24 1/2"

As well they caught 9 Amphilophus citrinellus ranging in size from 6" to 12" and 1 Hemibagrus nemurus (Gold) all of which were placed in a 180g holding tank.

This reduced the fish (over 20") in the 15,000 that were possibly killing and eating the under 8" plecos that are needed to keep the glass clean.

So far the Wallago has not been seen to eat any of them in the 52,000.

After the fish were caught I refilled the 15,000 t within 15" from the top in a matter of 3 hours by sending the water required from the 52,000 and now am refilling the 52,000.

I want to thank my friends who helped me Terry Clements, Noel Nathaniel, Simon Luffman, Anthony McAslin, Jeff Mountjoy, Richard and Nikki Coffron.

Just caught the tail end of this thread. Can't wait till I have more time to go through the whole thing.

What is dec21 2012?
I hope it's not something I don't want to know.

According to the Mayan and Totec civilizations of Mesoamerica their calendar December 21, 2012 signifies the end of the "Great Cycle" of more than 5,000 years and the conclusion of the world we know and the beginning of the next.

The return of Quetzalcoatl.

The Mayans correctly predicted that the Earth, Sun and the center of the MilkyWay would be aligned on Dec 21 2012. This could/should cause a polar shift.

The result of which would mean a new world for the people who survive.

These days an approaching or imminent "End of the World prophecy" has taken on the Styrfoam ambience of a cultural cliche.

Depending on our beliefs and transcendent emphasis of our patriarchal religions it is left to each of us to consider the validity of their predictions.

In the mean time I put aside the world denying ambience, global warming and bio-extinctions and enjoy my fish.
