I second the hatchery idea. You could also try online, there are a couple of people who sell natives. Try this site.

Wow my official first post and walleyes are something I just found out a lot because I've been trying to get some too.
Well luckly I live in Minnesota and there are die hard game fish people here, we even keep game fish as pets. Right now I have 2 walleyes, 1 large mouth bass, and 2 crappie, well one just died. There are around 5 pet shops in the Twin cities metro area that I know carry game fish. The walleye I bought cost $13.99 but one place sold them for $20 each
They are all about 2-3" only but that's where you want them because eventually they'll outgrow the tank. No worry they'll be good eatin....J/K I would never. If you got a fish farm hatcher around your area then yes it's a good place to buy them. They are a lot cheaper at the fish farms, usually $3-$8 only for a fish but you might have to buy a lot of them. These fish farms usually do buisness with people that have private lakes or ponds and buy a lot of baby fish to stock up for the future.
If you don't have a place around you then I suggest don't buy them out of state because the shipping cost an arm and leg. The reason is you need to ship them overnight to be safe on the fish. I got a quote on 4 4" walleyes from a place in NY and it was $100 totaled with shipping :WHOA: $25 bucks for the fish and $75 for the shipping, man forget it.
Best thing to do is just use the internet and search all the pet shop around you and ask them. It'll be hard because petshops need a special license to sell game fish and if people don't buy enough then it's not worth the extra money to buy the game fish license.
Well hope I helped, any questions just ask. I talk like a pro but stay tuned, I will be asking many question about native fishes cause I just learning myself.

Keeping game fish in home aquariums are illegal in minnesota.

Nope they are legal if you buy them from a pet store. When I bought my walleyes at the first pet shop they wrote their license code on my reciet. They said by this they are transfering the license to me so I can keep it.
Funny though, the second place I went has a very good reputation on carring hard to get fishes like game fish and tropicals. When I bought my two crappies I ask about the reciet and they said they've never done this before and said to not worry about it. Just tell the DNR or whatever that you bought it from them and there will be no issues.
Trust me it's legal, not sure if it was illegal couple years ago but now for sure it's legal. Some hard core fisherman even told me that you can even keep game fish that's undersize as pets as long as you have a kid with you. It's one kid per fish, I'm not kidding you. I found this in a different site but cannot link it here because of rule I think. Its a state law too what I just said.

Your best bet is to head north and fish for them in OR or WA. Hatcheries have a minimum for shipping and the shipping won't be cheap. You'll also have a problem finding a hatchery that'll ship walleyes to CA since they're on the Restricted Fish Species list.

Walleyes are a big mean perch, to 40+" long and nearly 24 pounds, biggest I have caught was barely 5 pounds.

they wont ship to cali
Jonah's aquarium does special order them but they are seasonal, the good thing is you can buy just one if you want. The other sites I have seen have 500 lb minimums. that is around 5000 small walleyes  , got a real big tank? :grinno:
