Well I knew trouble was coming when my paratilapia polleni tried to form a territory in my 150g SA/CA tank. He was quite the busy fish fending off all who got near his place. Today I had noticed he took a bit of a beating, although he still had his territory. The only other fish that showed signs of battle was my red devil. The polleni has been moved to my 180g for now.

OK I may be wrong, but isnt that praratilapia an african fish?? Good riddance, dont pollute a nice SA/CA tank with african fish. Wait a minute, I keep a distochodus in one of my SA/CA tanks, so forget what I just said. Just for the record my disso is the ONLY african fish that I will ever keep.

Wow - I didn't think Paratilapia were considered "hearty" enough to even put into a boisterous community like that. Beautiful fish.

I've been there. My polleni staked out the end of a 125 and my amarillo decided he liked the spot too and laid a similar smack down on the polleni.

The polleni are still my favorite cichlid-which is from Madagascar not Africa. :D

Madagascar IS Africa...

:nilly:

I agree if we were discussing strictly the geographic location of the two, but since our discussion was about Cichlidae...I was refering to the morphology and cladistic similarities of the fish.

Madagascar cichlids are closer to the "ancestral cichlids" and in turn closer to the New world cichlids then they are to the typical and wussy "African lake cichlid" (in most cladograms I‘ve seen).

I was a bit too vague I guess...

"The polleni are still my favorite cichlid-which is from Madagascar not Africa"

I'll try to be a bit more concise and tread lighter next time :naughty:

Just to re-emphasize my point: Madagascar cichlids are not African Lake cichlids.

And the Polleni is definitely "hearty" enough to be in a New World tank (there are firemouths in there for crying out loud)...they just don't pick their battles as well as they should :) and sometimes take a beating for it.

:D And you can keep the "duhhhh!!"'s to yourself.

No duhhh here - just being literal as always... but it is definitely an interesting aspect that they are quite different as you say. Then there's the whole West African aspect, and then the different groups of Tilapias.... what a bunch!

While I agree with most of this, it still would be like myself saying "I am from the United Staes, not Noth America."

Yeah, yeah, I know-which is why I 'adjusted' my comment to compair Madagascar to African Lake Cichlids. "I am a U.S. citizen, not a Canadian":D (that ought to cheese off the Canadians...maybe).

Sorry for the stolen thread, and nice Polleni (beat up or not).
