Does anyone have any info on this cichlid, saw 1 at the lfs the other day and sparked interest. Would it be okay in a 46 Gal Malawi tank, presently 6-2 inch fish The most aggresive being a 1 3/4" demosoni.

A Buttikoferi will easily outgrow a 45 gallon tank, 75 or a 90 would probably be a bare minimum for one as they get something a little over a foot. Plus I think it would end up eating all your fish. :)

a wonderful fish, but can be very, very aggresive. the only fish i have been able to keep with mine is a common pleco that is somewhat larger than him.

Hornet Tilapia can grow over 12" in total length. Also, it is very aggressive fish and capable of killing your small fish. Not a good idea to add it to your tank.

I had mine in my Malawi 90 gallon and had to pull it out due to aggression. It was beating the other fish to death.

Beautiful fish, though.

I had one and it killed most of the fish in my buddies 75 including a full grown oscar. What length are they a wuss at? He was the nastiest fish I ever had even nastier than my dovii.

P.S. I gave him to my buddy because he was killing my fish.

i saw a 12" one at my lfs once, he'd charge the tank and grind his teeth at you.
i have an 8" one now, he has a stalemate with my 7" jag but my 6" female midas and 10" mayan dominate him. the poor guy tries though,he has a lot of heart.

I've got a breeding pair in my 15k that are 16". They took about 15 years to get that size.

When Buttikoferi are younger, they display that yellowish coloration. That is why they are often called 'Hornet Tilapia', with the black and yellow stripes.. As they grow older, it fades into black and grey/black and white depending on the mood they are in..
