im just wandering if u can cross any fish. like taking a bass or perch or something and squeezing the sperm over a cichlids eggs. they squeeze spawn alot of trout that way.

Why don't you try it and let us know how it goes?

I thought the same thing!!!!!
It has to be possible (if its possible to squeeze it out of them, maybe it only works with some fish? I will do some google-ing on this.)
well found a video on youtube and apparently they just gut the fish to get the eggs and the sperm out so I don't kno how you would trade your fish's life for a possibility of a hybrid. But if you can squeeze then I tstill think its worth trying.

Yeah, try it and let us know. What kind of fish would you want to cross?

If your trying to cross a bass(sunfish) with a cichlid it wont work...

well lets all give it a go maybe someone will get lucky. so take 2 fish that will spawn and watch them and as soon as she lays the eggs get them out and start yanking all ur fish out of the big tanks and squeezing the snot out of them maybe u can end up with a quadruple hybrid. lol kidding

interesting point but I would not risk damaging any of my nice fish trying it out
does make me curious though:D

What about like the mother cichlid takin care of the eggs like fanning ect could the eggs hatch without that care.

yes but you need a current to replace it
this is done quite offten by Flowerhorn breeders I have done it myself if I do not trust one or both of the parents. Abubble strip works well or a filter in front of them whatever so long as it is a nice steady current not to strong though!

I have heard of a crazy hybrid between something like a catfish and a carp so it can be done. It sounds stupid tbut there was a post on here about it just recently.
someone try it please.

It's NOT possible. Maybe the person was describing it as something that just LOOKED like a hybrid between a carp and a catfish.
It is 100% impossible. It's like trying to cross a human with a chimpanzee.
Milking only works with certain species. If you don't do it right, you might squeeze its guts out and kill the fish.

This was something I thought about a couple of years ago. I did alot of googling on the subject. It's called "stripping" a fish where you press/stroke on the abdomen of of a ripe female to release the eggs and siphon the milt (sperm) from the males with a cathoder. The eggs and milt are mixed and stirred in a beaker, then put in some sort of special aeroated tank to hatch.
I could only find info on this practice w/ carp and bass. But I could find nothing on cichlids. Seems like a great to ensure viable fry without risk of damage to fish thru fighting, imcompatability, etc.

True, but you risk injury by applying too much pressure and damaging the internal organs.

Does anybody actually know how to milk a fish... Where to squeeze/stroke and how hard? Damit now I feel dirty.

There's a vid on youtube of a guy milking trout. From what I remember, you grasp with the head facing you in your less dominant hand. Use the dominant hand to gently apply pressure laterally in the abdomen area away from you. I've tried this with sunfish I caught and released, gathered a few mL of milt and eggs, but I didn't have a set up to bubble them. Upon release, the fish acted normally, but I didn't apply much pressure.

What would be the "set up to Bubble them."

I wouldn't try it on smaller fish, you couldn't even tell if you got the milt out. It much better on larger species.

the problem for you guys is that how are you going to get your female on the day its ripe. they need to be ovulating. the boy aint so hard..but the girl is a pain.
in aquacuture the person is there the day they are ready ussually becasue they injected them with hormones to induce it. something you aint gonna do to a small fish. the hormones only work if the fish is properly in season too.
theres a post above that says it all. not all things will cross, the general rule is crossing ability is the exception. you can sure try fish that come from the same ancestry. some girl tried to tell me that her dog came from a dog cross with a fox. well it turned out that it didnt. she just thought it looked that way..

back when i posted this is what i was talkinng about. ok i had a female rosequeen and a sterile red texas so the rq would lay eggs for hiim so i thought maybe the eggs could be jerked immediatly and i could possibly grab another large male cichlid out of my other tank and possibly milk his juice with the newly layed rq eggs. i tried this and no it did not work. the male has to be ready just like the female. someone went digging to bring this back up. lol:D

I bet you could catheter (is that the word?) milt out of a male at any time if you knew how.
I completely forgot about this thread, so when I read through it I was so suprised to see my own posts.
Also, I bet not much digging had to be done because the new hybrid forum change probably brought this thread right to the top.

if you could have yanked the eggs it would have been interestin to "man milk" all your male fish, and all the male fish from your local mfkers and make a dirty love soup and see what hatched

in order to cross fish they have to be geneticaly similar aka catfish to another catfish, bass to another sunfish, etc most times they have to be in the same family there are a few exceptions but not many

Only if the two species have the same number of chromosomes, which usually only happens in similar type fish (cichlids with cichlids, etc). However, sometimes even if the number of chromosomes is the same the sperm just can't penetrate the egg because it has already evolved to somehow penetrate its own species' egg.

its actually possible to cross a chimp with a human there was some special I saw a while back talking about a suspected chimp x human hybrid

I don't think so, not without some SERIOUS scientific interference. Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes (46) while chimps have 24 pairs (48). It just doesn't work.
