I had two peruvian gars, an aro, and one tire track eel. All were living together peacefully for over a year. One day I came home to discover one of the gars had been bitin stomach just in the right spot, it died. The gars and aro are friends, so I can only imagine it was the eels fault. Lesson learned about my eel:(

The aro is pulling a frame, Large spiney eels have relatively small mouths but strong bites, I saw one take the tail off a 6" bala once, snip.
No ,usually tire track eel will harass fire eel until injury or death even though fire eel grows bigger.Injuries to spiney eels are notoriously difficult to cure.

My aro use to swim all over the tank, and he would have nips out of his fins. The gars would stay at the top without any injuries, that's why I feel it was the eel... but who knows...they got fed everyweek a couple dozen fish...

Have you seen any full size eels?Even though many sites state sizes as maximum in the wild, fire eels usually grow larger especially in terms of thickness.

biggest i've seen in person is 24" tire track. and 18" fire eel. i have both but they're still both under a foot. my tire track is very territorial. and always hiding. total opposite of my fire.

What size were the fish when the attack took place?
Our arro is in with spotted gars, 3 the same size and 2 smaller,4 spotted pike characins same size as smaller spotted gars,a sperata aor about the same size as the arro and a brown ghost knife. His tail got shredded overnight. Also the pike characins have some bites in fins.He gets on with the large gars but they have to be suspects as he swims all the time as do the spotted pikes, but spotted gars ofter life on bottom giving easy target if it was to be catfish. Also bites in fins of pikes look suspiciously like shape of gars mouth.
