I'm thinking of making a small experimental pond in the backyard for next summer and just go with some goldfish or something. :D

If I were to dig out a pond like she did, how much would that run me? Include filtration and all that.

depends on how you go about it. I put together my 200 gallon for under 100$. Free jacuzzi, free ballast tank, free pump, free quilt batting. I think the only thing we bought was the pvc (we already had some fiberglass and resin laying around).
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v122/Isis_Nebthet/pond.jpg
If you upscale it to 5000 gallons here's the rough figures:
200$ pump (low electrical use 2250 gph)
300$ liner
200$ for filter media
12$ for a 55 gallon barrel
60$ for bulkhead fittings (may be less depends on what you're doing and the size of the holes I only use the ones from winnipeg plastics 3" is 20$).
Pvc parts and glue ect.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now if your going tropical with this pond add in 1600$ for a pond heater run off natural gas
You can also make a heat exchanger though I've not done this before so I can't ballpark it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here's miniature ;)

Anything that can hold water can be a pond.

These are two pictures of the pond I built (still working on it) for my parents. It is muti-layered, and has two smaller pools on the upper layers by the top of the waterfalls. I wanted to go all out, but they had to rein me in, and size it down. They mostly wanted it for viewing purposes, with a pond as a bonus, lol, so I wasn't able to do it exactly as I wanted though. I have some other cool photos of when it was first being dug out though, and of the cranes I needed to lift some of the rock (some were as much as 1800 ponds, like the rock bridge!!!). The "main pool" ( I think it is a little small for my tastes) is from an artificial basin. I just did that to make things a little easier on me, lol, I got lazy after the other two, and the construction. I still have a lot of cosmetics to finish, and about another 1200 pounds or more of rock to put in, but over all, I think it is comming along ok. Once I finish all my filters, cosmetics, and plants, I will try and work on my parent's Idea of cool fish. LOL -- I.E, they were thinking goldfish, and mosquito fish. eeeww! What a waste! I think I can make them see otherwise though, lol.
