View Full Version : Daydreaming Pirarucu Pond

Hi I was dreaming about a Pirarucu pond for a 6' Pirarucu today..lol
but, I read that the corners of aquariums and ponds is bad for them..why is that?

and IF I build a pond, does it have to be all natural and have shorelines.
OR
can it be like a pond that has the same depth anywhere you walk on the bottom? So it's just like a big giant tank underground?

They tend to freak out when they get nosed into corners. When that happens, they react quickly and tend to smack straight into opposite walls, breaking their neck and dying.

Shore-type edges are perfect, but not required by any means. I've got verticle edges on mine and a huge acrylic tunnel running right done the middle of it. Scrappy does pretty well with it, though I was worried at first.

And as a side note, an arapaima gigas will get much larger than 6 feet, so think big when doing this. Plan for at least a 10 foot animal.

yeah..i've seen a 15' Pirarucu in person at Japan. haha the thing was scary..

and when you say nosed into corners..are you saying when we peek at them from above when they're in a corner...or when a aggresive fish corners them?
What should I do to avoid this? Make a oval shaped pond?

Even something as simple as them swimming into a corner face first can spook them. An oval shape would be best.

hey pirarucu319, the dreaming part was pretty easy.lol
what's a paiche?

my "monster" pond would be a koi pond.lol the size of them makes them a "monster" though. i think the biggest is close to 4'..my great grand-pa's fish.

this will happen(IF it happens.lol)..in at the LEAST 20years or so..haha
i have no idea how much a 40' ponds would cost..and the monthly electricity/water/food bills with it too..

oohhh..
brazillian called pirarucu as paiche..
that what i mean..
but pirarucu eat almost anything.
teach them from the very beginning
mine as you can see avatar almost everything.
just throw to him..
no more...
BUT..personally pirarucu is totally fun to kept.
sometimes they could be so funny
got any plan?
wanna see the dimension?

Slightly unrelated....I like to daydream about setups too ( some probably unrealistic) . It's just fun to think about.
Usually it's arowanas for me when it comes to bigger fish, for some reason I've always been attracted to them.

When I imagine such a large setup, I would think either swimming with the fish or being in a boat would be the best way to interact with such a large fish as pirarucu ( who I tend to call arapaima).

if u like to interact with ure fish u cant beat the fat, friendly red tail catfish. i have yet to meet a fish who can match their personalities.
