one thing i'd like to confirm though is if clown knives do change spots as they grow older from your own experience? my first clown knife which i grew from about 8" to 23.5" tip to tip was with me for 6 years and its spots considerably changed..

has anybody experienced this change as well? i moved mine in a 400 gal pond when it was about 18" (no changes in spots at that time yet).. so i never really witnessed the gradual change of the spots.. i'm not sure if this is only because its in a pond?

also, do royals have a similar change in their spots as well?

I love the more solid look of a clown knife.

since i already have a clown knife (as well as you did) i would go with a royal, plus i like their different spotting pattern, just my opinion though

I have always thought Royals were cooler. If you can find one, I'd take it over a regular clown any day. Better yet, get both.

Clown's often have their spot patterns change, don't know about royals. I think royal look better.

sorry to hear to hear your clown knife loss... personally i'd choose a royal knife, just for the simple fact that they are more rare and uncommon than the clowns. Unless, of course... you come across a reg. clown that has something "different" about it?? like a different distinctive spotting pattern, for example. But that's just me. GL with your decision!

I still prefer clown knife.....

Really like both but prefer royal over clown for two reasons:

1. Like the psychedelic pattern on a royal better

2. Less cliche to have a royal than a clown

Both are great though. I don't own a 300g + tank to have either one so I just make miniatures of them.

thank you all for your inputs and suggestions :) ...

after much thought and reading all of the post here, i decided to go with the royal.. eventhough the poll shows clowns to be more popular, the changing of their spots as they grow is what put me off on them.. as with my late one, i really didn't like the result of the deformed spots that turned out.. anyway, i got a 8.5" royal with really nice spots, i'll post some pics as soon as i can ;) ..

again, thanks for all who took time in voting

Ya did a good thing! Notice that the poll shows clowns & royals neck & neck in the race for popularity after clowns were way ahead in the beginning. I voted Royal cuz they are more oddball. I'm guessing that most of the older & more jaded fish keepers went with royals for that reason.

Please show us some pics!

That's cool that you went with the Royal. I personally love their pattern of small lined spots. Let's see some pics.

about spots changing, it'll depend on where it's located, if it's on the bottom, then the pattern doesnt' really change. but if it's in the mid body, then it does stretch.
i do like the clowns solid look. and look at the 2nd picture and count the spots on that baby! :D
