Hi, I am getting a pair of red texas cichlids which are both fertile but their color isnt perfect yet. Will they grow into the red color as they grow? Also, how do you get that SUPER red color? Is it by chance where you just pick out the good looking babies?

color yes it is all in the genes, and it depends on your fish they may never fade off and look red most do not. only very few do, and if they do a lot of the time it will be orange or lighter shades. They are made by selective breedings using Tex/BP Tex/Mamon

your lucky to have the super red one's those are one of a kind and they will cost a lot to have one the better qualities even small you can already see red color, but the most of the time regular one's will not fade to a red one will just be orange some orange with black markings.

if you bought a high quality super red texas by 1-2 inch it should be faded already. it should be all red or orange. check out this online fish store. they are selling those srt for $125 plus tax and shipping. I know coz I bought one and when it arrived it was only 1.5 inch and was all red. here is the picture. thanks.

Yeah.. because that pair of texas will only produce texas.. and I doubt they'll be red.. looking at the parents.

:iagree: You need to do some selective hybridized breeding to get those really bright red texas.

some of that depends on you. with hybrids, they "evolve" based on there care they were given. if you feed it medioker foods and average care, chances are it will not be as stunning as it could be. if you feed it color enhancers and good foods it will have lasting effects in the long run.
some people on this sight will pick up 1-2" nothing special FHs, beef them up, treat them right, and can get some real beauts

Rule #1 with the RTC, If its not red, most likely it will never turn red. Here are some pictures from some I brought in 2 months ago

I have several large mature adult red texas and the males are never fertile, the females always lay eggs and no matter what male i put in there never get any fry. So just some advice chances are the males will not be fertile.
