lol i WISH my pond was big enuf...it would only be good for a short period of time. i intend to release him in the lake behind my house that also falls on my dad's property (so its totally legal) there r other huge fish and many feeder fish....this is after he eventually outgrows the pond though. another alternative would be to give it to the aquaria exhibit where they have 3 arapaimas already.

TLkmDN
09-28-2007, 6:33 AM
lol since u asked ill take a walk down later and snap sum...its pretty huge...like bigger than olympic size pool...there are flowerhorns...carp...snakeheads...silver arowanas...parrot fish...cichlids....people have obviously been throwing a lot of fish in there..and they have bred like mad...if u fish there (like i did b4) u would get a bite every 30 seconds....no joke)

LOL ure right man.. i gave up on pellets cause he just got way too skinny and his skin tone became darker which is usually a bad sign :s anyways he won the battle of attrition so i bought 40 bucks worth of live baby talapia for him to eat. now hes extremely happy, rounder and shining brightly. oh yeh i also got new tankmates for him. one jardini and 2 RTC*TSN hybrids. they seem to be doing fine cause there r so many feeder fish. im going downstairs like NOW to take pics...wait 5 mins for pics...

yeh the feeders were really pissing the jar off plus they were creating so much waste. i had to remove more than half of them and throw them in the pond. now the tank is much cleaner and more peaceful. the arapaima seems to be doing very well. its stomach is bulging and he seems vry active :)

thanks guys i had to take out more than half of the feeders cause they were dirtying the water. i might have to buy baby carp instead of talapia cause talapia tend to be aggressive so my two marble/rtc are extremely scared and refuse to eat them :s didnt know they wud be such sissies

But your pond has to be a biological mess...since its the dumping ground.

nah if u think about how big the pond is (including depth) and how small the feeder fish are they make up almost nothing....eventhough i threw half the feeders in i can barely even see them unless i look really carefully. plus the big cats probabably ate them all

Largest recorded close to 20 feet a long time ago.
They are rare over 15 feet now due to taking so many of the largest out of the gene pool, and the time it takes to grow that size (they get 8-10 feet quickly in a few years, then REALLY slow down).

The largest I've worked with was 14 feet and a touch over 400 lbs.

10-25-2007, 7:31 PM
hey zoodiver thanks for the input. sorry guys but im actually back in perth until the 16th of november cause of my final exams. then im back for 4 months baby! heaps of updates then. my maid told me the pima is now like over a foot. maybe more. i wonder wat he'll be in half a months time wen i go back. Anyone heard of keiko? He was a killer whale that starred in a movie called free willy. He lived in several aquariums all over the world. Eventually, he was released back into the icelandic waters where he was caught, however he died because he was so used to being fed by people and couldn't fend for himslef. I dunno if this applies to fish(and actually i doubt it greatly) but you never know. At least i don't lol.
BTW, it's great you rescued him from 10 gallon tank. What a horrible fate for a gigas. Hopehe does well, Art.

TLkmDN
11-03-2007, 11:01 PM
LOL well yeh he shud be fine in this lake cause there r so many freaking fish there...u can catch a common cichlid every 30 seconds without fail or at least get a bite everytime u throw the rod in. no joke ive done it many times :) plus i only feed the pima live food in the tank and in the pond (in the future) so he has a lot of practice. i need to introduce him to the lake cause the smaller fish r overpopulating. there needs to be a balance..

The release of previous pets is frowned upon in the U.S. that is why snakeheads & asian arowanas are illegal without proper paperwork. Will a non native species thrive in the lake ? I think the climates are a little different but then again being captive raised it will probaly have adjusted by the time it gets that big. Nice find.

hahaha yeh the fishing is crazy. in fact theres an overpopulation of fish now since we put up the 'no fishing' signs cause random people kept coming to fish. maybe its time to take those 2 signs. theres a notorious resident snakehead in the pond which is around 4 feet. no one has managed to catch it yet so its really pissing those old fogies off.

I think the next thing you should do is dig underground next to the lake and build a cement wall with a huge glass rectangle inset for the purposes of viewing all the monsters. Of course the water would be dark so you would have to put some lights around it, but dude itd be so so sweet!

Glad you saved the pimas, and boy it would be fun to go shopping, i mean fishing, in your lake.

I think the next thing you should do is dig underground next to the lake and build a cement wall with a huge glass rectangle inset for the purposes of viewing all the monsters. Of course the water would be dark so you would have to put some lights around it, but dude itd be so so sweet!

Glad you saved the pimas, and boy it would be fun to go shopping, i mean fishing, in your lake.
haha and the beautiful thing about malaysia is that i dont have to do it myself! u can pay people to do it properly for u and it would work out cheaper in the long run with less problems. the filtration would cost thousands upon thousands of dollars though...maybe for my 20th birthday??? i have to suck up to mum cause im still 18 about to go into uni so i dont have a good job...

hey man the dimensions of the tank are 7feet long by 2.5 feet wide by 3 feet high...the tank is actually custom made by pond manufacturers and is resting on a permanent concrete slab that has pebble wash decorations on it. we paid like 12000 ringgit malaysia for it cause it is basically a parmanent structure that will never rot away or move. yet my last tank was 8 foot by 2.5 feet by 2.5 feet and it only costs 5800 ringgit. it did not look half as nice but it was about half the price. it was not a permanent structure with its support and frame made of wood.

with all those plecos you don't ever see any giving your catfish a hard time?sucking on slimecoat?Ive heard so many horror stories about plecos with other bottom dwellers I wont risk it.

I tried just once a while back with a TSN and a common and the common wouldnt leave the TSN alone.

well the simple answer to that question is that the plecs dont bother the catfish at all because the pond has a lot of daily algae growth so the plecs are pretty well occupied...secondly the pond is big so the fish dont really interact that much. thirdly...there r not too many plecs left...only the big fat lazy ones are alive...the rest r eaten haha...they wouldnt mess with the catfish anyways...the size difference is huge..

Good for you. When I was a kid I used to have a passion for art and was very good at it, probably could have made a career out of it. My mom supported it with hand me down art supplies that she had lol. Not quite the support your parents gave.

I can't be mad but dammit I can be jealous. Thats a nice set up you have there. I hope to own land like that someday. I would love to fish in my backyard.

nah man the arapaima passed away..he jumped out and by the time i found him it was too late :( he was about 2 feet at the time...a lot of my pond fish r wayyy smaller than my RTC...but sumhow they all get along fine...never even had an attack..its weird...maybe cause they r all fat :)))

hey guys just wanted to give u an update....im gona try again with the arapaimas...this time im going to buy a pair of them. the reason for my change of heart is because my mum agreed to extending my pond to double its size into her rock garden that she no longer apreciates. therefore i should be able to house full grown arapaimas now. i was wondering if its possible for my to keep baby arapaimas with baby stingrays...any opinions?

Depends on one major factor - getting both fed. I've seen some arapaima that are aggressive eaters - and won't let food get down to the rays. I'd also kept rays that will swim up mid column and aggravate the arapaima so much while feeding that the arapaima go off food.

Cool......i was told by my frd that also live in Malaysia the best thing living in your country is that u dun need to be "millionaires" to own big piece of land....Considering having such lake in other countries, you certainly need to be someone to own it.....;)

Very nice baby. Its curious to see how crazy is this price thing for the same fish. We can find 6-7 inch baby pimas here in Brazil for US$10 direct from a fish farm or almost US$50 at aquarium speciallized shops.
