I went to the pet store today to c what new cichlids they have going on. the owner of the store offered me this Pacu in the display tank for free. This fish was as big as my 29 gallon tropical tank. Now I have two oscars and I was woundering if they are going to be that huge? I mean I realy wanted to take that pacu home, but at the same time i didnt know if it would kill my other cichlids. Does anyone know how big does a pacu gets?

Yes oscars usually only get about 12-14". As for the pacu, in the wild they eat fruits and seeds, but in captivity, I have seen them easily eat small fish another factor now is, How big is your tank???

In the wild some pacus reach almost 3' long

Red Pacu's get about 30" and would need about 180 gallon. Black Pacu's get to be 60" and need at least a 500 gallon tank.

Your Oscars will get to be just little over a foot long, about 13". And I hope you are not keeping them in that 29 gallon as two of them will need something like a 75 gallon.

My tank is only 55 gallongs. but i have 2 oscars in there. and by the way I have the fish in a big buck now. I know I think I have to buy a bigger tank I just dont know how big and plus no one wants to spend to much money on their tank.
I just had to bring him home today because I knew their were going to kill him. However I dont know whats going to happen if i put him with my monsters (Oscars)?

I know what you mean when it comes to tank and equipment prices, but do what I do, look in newspapers and things like craigslist and you will find some GREAT deals once in a while. I see 75 gallons in $200 range about once a week, you can invest and buy that and then sell your current 55 for $150-200 bucks and basically upgrade for almost nothing.

As far as Pacu goes, nice that you saved him but you need to find him a better/bigger home. I suggest you post in in the Sell section and try to give him away to someone who has a few hundred gallon tank or a pond. Perhaps you will even be able to make a few dollars on him.

Your Oscars and the Pacu should get along, they will not bother the fish because of his size. Please dont leave him in a 55.

(Your Oscars should be just fine in the 55 until they will start getting to be around 9" or so..)

i have seen pacus in public aquariums that would in no way even be able to barely move in any tank save something in the few thousand gallon range. THEY GET HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The pacu and the oscars will be fine with each other, but your going to need a bigger tank. If you live anywhere near me a friend of mine has a 230 gallon tank that he's giving away for free to whoever will come pick it up. Comes with the stand, lights, filters, the whole deal... for free. I would take it but I don't have any extra room, or I would.

Nevermind about the tank, I just called him to double check (and somehow forgot that it's almost 3 am). Someones coming later this afternoon to come pick it up. Sorry.

Hey, I have a vacant 1196.88 U.S. gallon Ply~Wood tank (that I need to start investing in to get it up and running again) I'll take him. I live in PA. but will travel to save a fishie as long as you live near the east coast that is.
[I.D.= 10'x4'x4'] with wet/dry and a 5gallon FBF for compensation.

No offense but red pacus are extremely common, which means if you have no means of providing a proper environment for it, you will have a VERY hard time giving it away to anyone. It will grow big and powerful, it's very possible for it to break your 55 gallon tank unless a bigger tank is promptly provided.

First thing- the pacu might ACCIDENTLY kill your oscars. Pacus are in an essence.. big dumb fish, that are all muscle. If he turns and accidently knocks your oscar he can kill him. I had a 6" pacu kill my ROYAL pleco... (GRRRR) by accident. Second.. dude they break tanks when they get big. So get a big big tank. They can be really cool. Have ALOT of algae pellets on hand.. mine love thoes.

I have 2 RBs in a 75 gallon tank with an Oscar. They are all about 5" and are are going to go into a 265 after the summer by themselves. After that i may even put them in a larger tank but ill see how they do before i consider that. As for the Pacu killing your oscars... the only way i could see that happening is if the RB is ALOT bigger than the Oscars.

Sometimes my Pacus will do what i call the "death scare". Theyll dart around the tank hitting other fish, plants, the heater and sometimes even lifts the 10 lb. hood on the tank:headshake! When they do this sometimes my Oscar goes all pale and then goes to the bottom of the tank as if hes 'dying', but usually five minutes later he'll pop back up begging for more food. So as for the Pacu beatin' up on the Oscars i dont exactly see that happening unless they are much bigger. :) :) :)

Hah..good thinking there..anyway..such a beauty deserves all the freedom possible...guess at this size...no tank is good enuff to hold it comfortably...
