Which filtration system is best for keeping 2 Peacock Bsss in a 70 gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Howdy,

I run an Eheim 2080 on a 75 gal with one wolf fish, and it works like a charm  I wouldn't go any lower on the canister scale, though.

On a 70g, wet/dry, HOB, or canister will all get the job done.

i got a xp3 on my 75, with 2 pbass, oscar, firemouth, and 3 pictus cats. and it works gggggggggreat

ONOZ!!! :nilly: Not a HOB :grinno: (Yer always right...where did that come from :D )

Here is my story: I had two pbass in a 75g as their second grow out tank. It has a Emporer 400 and two large sponge filters (sound familliar Rally? :D ) There were no problems while they were small but when they hit around the seven inch mark, they started overloading the filters. I also have apple snails in there, and they are my water quality alert system. Several weeks ago they started floating, but would drop back down after a few hours. The first time I saw it, I was in a rush to leave town overnight. The following day they were normal and a quick ammonia test showed nothing. The second time it happened, I took a water sample and the ammonia had shot up to 4ppm!!! This was the first time I had ever seen ammonia over 1ppm and was shocked. I did a 90% water change and cut way back on their food for several days (I recently switched them from feeders to shrimp). The day after their next big feeding, it happened again. I don't know if they were constipated or just happened to let it all loose at the same time, but they were clearly exceding the carrying capacity of the filters. I moved them to my 250g and the wet/dry didn't even flinch.

I initially thought that the filters had gone sterile and were cycling again:screwy:, but they were healthy enough to consume huge amounts of ammonia in about a day (I presume the first time was also around 4ppm of ammonia). Moral of the story: never underestimate the gut of an over fed pbass :D

Good luck with your filter,

WTF! I thought you were the one that is always right!!

I guess I should have been a bit more specific. I wouldn't trust a single HOB, but with a couple (good ones) you could get away with it:)
