How many gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's not about gallons, it's about foot print and edge style.

They don't like edges, so you'd need a tank that has a shore line. You also need a lot of space for it to swim in a natural pattern - which means linear, not in small circles.

Hmmmm ....
How many gallons to keep a Great White?

realistically - an ocean. Since they are know in several cases to travel over thousands of miles.

To keep a Great White in captivity, for it's entire life. If I had to guess - I would say the following minimums.

- a staff of dozens of Marine Biologists(to keep track of the shark 24/7) - specializing in Shark Behavior & Biology.
- endless supply of Salmon, Mackeral, Tuna, & Seal or Sea Lion meat.
- A natural seawater tank the size of small bay(about 2 sq. miles or 12 billion gallons) - that's about the size of 2000 Atlanta Aquariums.

- A natural seawater tank the size of good size bay(at least 6 billion gallons) - for record that's about 1000 times the size of the Atlanta Aquarium.

Anything least - likely won't be enough.

Of course you're right in saying that no hobby aquarist should keep a white shark, but I do find your numbers a little off. Several have been housed in million gallon tanks in the Monterey Bay Aquarium.

yes but they were only kept for a few months and were either realeased after or died.

True - but none have been kept in captivity - longer than 200 days. And all were juveniles - under 7' when released(at least the ones on display).

And Note: I stated - "in Captivity for it Entire Life". Which is a huge difference compared a few months.

Also there's quite a huge difference in attempting to keep a 5-6' long, 100-150 lbs shark vs. a 15-18' long, 1-1.5 ton Shark.

And then you have to take in to account - the beast we're talking about. While Great Whites are one of the more well researched shark species. There's still alot about their behavior, and lives that remains unknown. And what is known - states that these sharks live on a Global Scale.

I didn't say a Great White couldn't be kept in captivity, for it's entire life. Just that it would take a Gigantic tank/lagoon to so.

To the kind of scale of a tank/lagoon I'm talking about for housing a Great White for it's entire life - look at either Jaws 3 (Sea World with the large Saltwater lagoon) or Deep Blue Sea(large ocean based research station). Granted neither movie has very realistic sharks, but then that's usually a typical problem with Hollywood Shark movies.
