Hey guys im new to the forum, i have done lots of research on stingrays, im looking for one, I have a humerosa stingray on back order from the local pet store I had one die on me right away, water was perfect dealer thought it was just stress, I just hated seeing it go into the death curl, it was quite sad. It was in a 55 gallon (upgrading to a 250 soon) i know the 55 is to small for it, I learned that freshwater rays cannot have any salt in the water is this correct? I had put aquarium salt in because i had heard it helps freshwater fish breath easier and brings the stress level down. thanks

aquarium salt if fine to use. When purchasing a ray, buy from a reputable dealer or if it is at an LFS make sure it looks good and is eating. If you can see the pelvic bones, its either really hungry because the lfs has no clue what to feed it, or there is something wrong with it. Near minnesota, there are a few guys here who sell rays that would give you a healthy ray at a good price. Pat at amazon stingrays is a good guy. Search the vendor forum. No disrespect to the lfs but typically I wouldn't buy a ray from there. Hope this helps.

I agree with Big Dave, your LFS probably has very little idea how to care for a ray..
Ask them to feed it in front of you before you purchase it..
It died because you put it in a 55g, though. Get your 250g first..

I would only use aquarium salt if any of the rays had a open wound. Not sure if it helps with stress.

Aquarium salt helps with stress and I use it all the time on over 40 exotic rays with no problems, more then likely you just got a bad ray from the LFS. What size was the ray? Depending on the size it is not likley that the tank killed your fish - unless you put a big ray in there and it stressed him out.

it was about a 6" disk, so not to big i did have an upside down catfish in there with him but i took that out right away because he kept sucking on his disk

that probably stressed him out quite a bit. Good call on pulling him out. Can't say for sure why your ray died but it could have been many things. Search the forums and do alot of research.
What part of MN are you from? We have a couple at World of Fish in Richfield.

Go see Pat at AmazonStingrays.com. He has great captive bred motoro pups and good prices and he can ship them to you.
I was at his place a few weeks ago and he had a total of three litters (20 pups!) that were available for sale. His fish are very impressive.
