View Full Version : Red snakehead tank mates??
Doing some homework as i am thinking off getting 1 or 2 or these stunning monsters.
What could be kept with a red snakehead????
Are there any catfish, cichlids, pacus etc that could be grown from small and be ok together in the long run???

Normally wouldn't suggest keeping tankmates with redlines... but if anything, perhaps try some of the large growing Central American cichlids, gars, wallago cat sp., maybe an arowana (aussie or S.A. species). :)
Buddy of mine once kept a 2.5ft. Redline with a 10" AST as a tankmate. The redline was too big a size for the alli snapping turtle to bother with, and the turtle was small, but large enough so that the redline couldn't harm it! It was quite a scary 'crazy' looking combination!! :uhoh:

i've got 2 in my pond abt 50 cm. they go along really well with 4 of my 50 cm spotted gars a 78cm alligator gar and a 25 cm red devil. what's really weird is that they ate my 35 cm peacock bass and only left the head. the first time i bought them it wasn really aggressive. i've video taped it and u can see that it shows no aggresion at all..

Red can be very very funny if they grow up with certain fish they can be fine a friend of mine had a large red 2 1/2 foot with an alligator gar and a nile perch all were very large and all had grown up together I put my alligator gar in with then and he had the tail off of it that nigh. My red killed or maimed so many fish it was ridiculous. The only thing that lived with him in the end was a very large pleco.

Sorry, no pics. :( It was indeed, a "creatively insanely crazy" combination... I liked the looks of it... it was original and "out of the ordinary" setup. Quite a challenge to do these days... to make your tank 'stand out' from the rest?!! :uhoh:

dude, my snakehead was able to kill my hi fin shark and a really huge pleco! imagine more than a foot of that heavy armor@_@ but ironic as it may seem, he left the much smaller bichir with him alone@_@ i was still in grade 5 then though... may they all rest in peace.=(

hey bud... my personal opinion would be 2 juz keep reds wif reds... tis fellas are known 2 kill 4 the sake of killing... LoL...

As for the snakeheads they got to wait for now. If/when i do get them i am thinking of trying them with either an adult jag, or a dovii, a coulpe off plecs. I'll be getting them all from small (apart from the jag) so they can grow together whilst watching the aggression levels carefully! When there big enough i might even try my terrapins with em.
I doubt if it will be for a while though as i got to set up another tank for my exsisting stock.

the luck that i have had with redlines is that you must add one as the last addition to the tank. very bizarre but happened 2 times for me, it had no problem with the fish previously inhabiting the environment, but the second i went to drop something else in, even bigger and "more aggressive", it would tear its stomach out.
As for the aforementioned suggestion of keeping with a Wallago, i would shoot for a wallago leerii as it is the more compact and practical example of the genus. For sure you should definately keep it with something larger than it which displays the same temperment, but keeping a Channa with any other species of Wallago is a distinct risk; granted it would be a battle, but it would be a pricey and losing battle for the owner of both. Perhaps a large red-tail would be adequate?

My snake head killed every fish that you can name, his tank got busted so i had to put him in another tank that had everything in it and he ate the all. even 12 inch large mouth bass whole.......

im really excited about getting mine tmr.. u guys tinhk it would be good to keep a 7cm red snakehead with 2 bloodparrots thats bout a hand size?
