I put a trailer hook on a spinnerbait. The fish got hooked by the main hook. It was a small northern pike. I grabbed it by the back. It flopped and slid down my hand. The trailer caught me between the thumb and index finger. I cut the hook off and went home. I was 16. My dad cut the hook, but the barb was still in my hand. After an hour of surgery, they couldn't find it, and declared that it was fine. The point of the hook is still in my hand.

Sea bass fishing this summer on a charter boat. On the way back, I was clearing out the bait on my hook. The boat started moving so the weight fell over the edge and one of the hooks caught my thumb. 8oz weight falling exerts quite a force. Got the hook through my right thumb, very edge, not through my nail. Still didn't take away from the joy of a 4 lb black sea bass.

When I was in High School a few of my friends and I would go fishing almost every evening after school. We'd load up in the boat and fish until it got dark.

One day my buddy puts a Torpedo on and pulls back to cast it, starts throwing it and it burried into my cheek. 4 out of 6 hooks on the trebles got me. He starts tugging on it not knowing it was burried in my face. Finally I start yelling "God damn it Josh stop pulling."

Then our attempt at home surgery with Jack Daniels and razor blades to remove the hooks turned out very well.

I was fishing with my little brother here at home, and he was afraid to bait the hook. So I held on to it while sticking on a piece of chicken. My brother, who must have thought I was done, cast the line with my holding on the the hook. It dug traight through my thumb. Luckily it was at an oblique angle and since the end was sticking out, i was able to cut if off with pliers. That made pulling it our a little less unbearably painful

when i was around 12-14 years old i was fishing off newport pier here in california. it was shoulder to shoulder with other fishers. so me and dude on my right were getting ready to under cast and and as soon as he saw me cast too he held his line (didnt want to tangle each others line). well, since he did that the hook went behind his head and hooked some dude behind him watching in the lips. omgs i was soo scared, i ran to my dad and fished some where else.

lol, nice stories, I wish i the worst i have had was when i was baiting a strip of squid and i missed the squid and hit my thumb, it went about half a cim in, the barb didn't get me, but, nonetheless, it bled like crazy and it stung like hell, On that piece of bait i hooked a 2 foot long stingray who fought like, Then i put it in my little pond thingy i made in the sand, It was hard trying to get it out of the pond so no one could step on it..

so you had to go to the hospital?

The barb and point of the hook fell down inside the cut after my dad cut the hook. In hindsight, he should have pushed the point through, and then cut the hook. He thought I better go to the hospital. After digging around, the doctor couldn't find it, and determined it would be fine. It's still there.

I was fishing in a canoe w. 2 friends one time. I was in the back and the kid in the front got caught in a tree. So him being the man that he is starts pulling which in turn pulls the canoe straight towards the stuck lure. The lure then springs free and catches me right in the eyelid. I somehow got stuck in the upper portion where there is a little gap between your eye and lid.
They were freaking out and i was just like WTF...but it didn't hurt at all, I could still open my eye and see the lure right there.
It was a rapala shad rap. The upper treble was stuck in my eye.
We then went to a walk in clinic and got right in because of what looked like an extremely painful situation. They cut the hook out and that was that.
Whats funny is that they took a picture of my eye and then showed me some other shots of hooks they took out. (the clinic is 5 minutes from a beach)
fun times had by all...

I was about 9 when this happened. I was at a dock with my neighbor who was my age. I was at the back of the dock baiting my line, and my neighbor goes to cast his line, but he hits the release on the back swing. The hook caught me in th side of the throat and tore straight through the skin when he actually cast the line. No hospital trip.

Worst ever I was snelling a hook for a fluke rig.The line slipped and drove a 4/0 hook straight into my thumb.Barb was buried in the meat and the point was pointing at the nail so I couldnt push it through.I pulled back on it as hard as I could and sawed above the barb with a razor blade till it popped out.Man did that hurt!

I didnt get hooked, but...there was one time at a lake when I was a kid, walking around to get to our spot with my dad and brother and there was this other family walking towards us. There was this little kid, about 6-9 I'd say, swinging his rod about like a sword. As we got closer the kid started to get more vigarous with his swinging, the lure came flying at me, hit me on the ear, the kid 'striked' with the rod and the I felt the hook of the lure get the back of my ear. Luckily it turns out the kids father had curled back the hook (so it was just a metal loop in effect). It still caught me pretty bad though, a full metal lure to the ear as a kid. Stupid kid, but atleast a semi-responsible father.

Remember every body get a little pair of scissors and don't bite the line when tying hooks.. Even after what happened to me I still catch myself biting the line... It's just a lot faster.:grinno:

when i was 12 somehow hooked myself while casting and got it in the finger, just yanked it out as it wasnt that deep.
this past summer was on a boat fishing, putting on a worm, hit a wave, and once again the hook went into my hand instead.

when i was younger, my brother and i went fishing for with those little popper things. i went for a cast and caught him in the calf. it went all the way through to his muscle i think. we had to take him to the hospital cause we weren't sure how to get it out.

one time i caught a striped bass about 5 pounds. caught him with a top water lure.. zara spook i believe. well, while trying to take off the lure the striper suddenly shook around and i caught me right in the hand with one of the trebles... so here i was getting jacked around by a striper cause the lure was now attached to the meat of my hand and the frailing fish, instincts (or pain please go away adrenaline) immediately kicked in i put my hand on the floor, stepped on the fish, grabbed a big rock with the other hand and continuously beat on the fishes head between his eyes til it was dead. i drove home with the hook in my hand. pushed it through all the way cut off the tip and pulled it back through.

then i ate the sucker.

When I was younger, my mom, dad, little brother and I went out fishing on our boat. My brother was fishin off the bow. He was like 5 at the time and was using a Mickey Mouse push button real and still had trouble casting. When he goes to cast he forgets to push the button so the bait just swings in a big arc. The hook ends up going through his belly-button. It scarred him so bad he just stood there silent, but when he realized what happened he started screaming. It was easy to take out since it went all the way through. To this day he has a little dot where the hook went through.

a long time ago i tried a "bow" cast while trout fishing. well i had it pulled back so the rod was good and bent, slipped and the hook went into my finger i remember it was pretty deep, and i think i just pulled hard enough and ripped it out, i was afraid to "bow" cast for years. i still don't recommend it because it is basically the most impractical cast imaginable.

I was walking my dog at the local lake and threw a rock out on the ice to see if it would break through the ice. My dog (a black lab) ran out after it and he fell through about 40 ft from shore. I waited a few seconds to see if he could make it out of his hole by himself, he didnt and I had to rescue him. I laid on my stomach and slid out twoards him. I grabbed him by the collar and he ran by right where I was laying on the Ice and we both crashed through lucky me, We wernt to far from shore and the ice was only about an inch thick so I i broke a path to get back to shore it was only about 6 ft deep where he fell through and Im pretty tall so I more or less walked back to shore. My dog didnt even look cold he just shook off and was fine, but man I was freezing!
Im never doing that again, I just wasnt thinking at the time..

Haven t hooked myself to bad but was in the basement hookin up my line. I had to cut the line and didn't have scissors so went to cut it with a knife, and by accident pushed down with the sharp side up and cut my finger real good. Never ended up getting stitches cause it happened to be on my birthday but it turned out good and i still went fishing.

I was walking along the beach holding my rod cause the fish werent biting in the first lagoon area, when I kicked the sand for fun and a small hook went through my middle toe on my right foot. I kept stumbling for a while why I tried to remove it. I then tripped over some mangroves and out it came.

I was very young - maybe 5?? Fishing for catfish with my dad - I tried to set the hook on one but I tried a little too hard. The whole contraption came back at me, and the hook embedded itself in the pad of my thumb. It went in, and it went back out. I got scared and even though my dad was on the way over to help me, I just grabbed the hook and ripped straight out instead of backing it out properly. SUCH a smart girl! :D

this is an old post but earlier this summer it happenned to me.
I was fishing in Clove Lake for Bluegills, Pumpkinseeds, and Brown bullhead. I had a double hook rig on. I landed the biggest Catfish if my life (almost a foot long and well over a pound) the jr world record is 1 lb 5 oz.
The Catfish was on the bottom hook. I went to grab the leader... big mistake.
a little headshake was all it took. I didn't scream, it was more like a screech cuz I didn't open my mouth. I set The Catfish down on a little power thing that I sometimes fish from and use to unhook fish where it started squirming around like a Walking Catfish. i kept on screeching. my grandma got the knife and cut away the line connecyted to the fish and the rod. I picked up the fish with my other hand and fired it back into the lake, too occupied for a proper release. (As my Grandma asked the rangers what to do I kept fishing!) We went to the hospital. My Mom and Dad came home from work to the hospital. We waited for a few hgours for them to get wire cutters. they cut the eye of the hook and started to push it thru. MAN that hurt! they said it takes 2 seconds but it got stuck. Probably because it was one of those eagle claw hooks with barbs on the shank. i got the novicane or whatever...that hurt too...they grabbed it and pulled. It was wierd now thayt it was numb like the bone was growing and pushing on the skin. FINALLY it was out and now i had a pounding headache and my finger was swollen from the fluid in the shot.
Then I...
went back to the lake! And I had an UNBELIVABLE fishing day, catching and releasing around 10 catfish in 2 hours! The smaller ones actually jump when hooked. The box has a protruding white drainadge pipe that is half in/half out of the water. I released a small Catfish that circled and then jumped onto the pipe. I went back the next day too.:grinno::screwy:

I've read that the proper way to remove hooks goes like this:

Take a bit of string and loop it around the bend in the fishing hook. Use your thumb and press down on the end of the hook (towards your skin), then give it a good yank.

I've had the fun experience of getting hooked in the finger trying to keep a hook from swinging into my eyes

Bottomfeeder
08-27-2008, 11:26 AM
that works but most people are a little to squeamish. also if you miss it hurts really bad. If it's a lure with more than 1 hook, you can pull the other hook into you. Also you can pull out pieces of meat or muscle with the barb.
