I have a 125g and I was wondering which snakehead would be good in my tank. I did some research and I know there are small to large sizes. I just cant differentiate through all the latin names. It all starts to sound the same after awhile, channa this or that. Thought maybe you guys could point my search in the right direction.
Thanks

Definitely not the two large marulias or micropeltes.Marulioides grows to 20-24" so depending on the actual dimensions of the tank this would be biggest although it would need probably a bit bigger tank.Perhaps keeping a few bleheri would make a nice species tank as they are one of the few social snakeheads. One of restrictions is what is available to you at the time and whether you only want to keep single fish in tank.
go for the channa aurantimaculatas.. they are my favorites ;)

i would suggest different kinds besides micropeltes they are very mean and get very large....why not get a few different kinds like bleheri...lucius....or even a bunch of gauchas

just go to your local market. they'll probably have live ones.
in Japan, they sell them at pet shops since they are great feeders for larger specimen.

Hope to see some pic soon....can't see any now.....
Hiya Garfield, welcome to MFK, be patient you should be able to see them by the time you see this post, if not log out then back in, that usually works.
For your size tank you could also go for group of pleurophthalma

Snakeheads are cool. My Uncle in Thailand has one in a pond with a couple of huge soft shell turtles. He threw some raw chicken at the edge of the pond for the turtle to eat. All of a sudden...the snakehead leaped out of the water for some chicken. It was one of the coolest things I've ever seen  Too bad their illegal in California :(

Its a Channa Bleheri or Rainbow Snakehead. Its one of the smallest, only reaching 6"-7" max.
Unfortunatly thats not my one. I wish

You won't find in Ontario, they are not allowed. Try Montreal...I just tipped Caporegime on the location of a bunch of bleheri and pleurophtalma at big al's in Montreal. Not sure if they have some left...
I just bought two pleurophthalma there two weeks ago, they are great fish :)
CAPOREGIME: If you plan on putting the pleurophthalma in the 125g, then you will have to only put other pleurophthalma with him. They don't get along too well besides for pleurophthalma and bleheri (between themselves of course, putting a bleheri with a pleurophthalma will eventually end up in the pleurophthalma having "filet mignon" for lunch :D .

It killed and ate everthing except a bumble bee cichlid about 7" long.
Nobody could figure that out.
I actually had 2 that size. One I gave to a friend and don't know what happened to it because my friend was killed in a traffic accident.
The other one jumped out even though the lid had some serious barbell weights on top of it.

I have told this on here before a friend of mine had a 12ft with a red snakehead in it he had had this fish from it being 4in's long it was huge lived with a alligator gar Dorado's and a nile perch had grown up with them all ,and suffered them all , but as soon as you put any thing in of any size he would nail it! He bit a 2ft arrowana in half. The tail of a 2 ft knife fish. Also bit a huge giraffe cat in half "O" He also bit the head of the biggest wolf fish I have ever seen.........

channa aurantimaculatas r a nice specie but i have 1 of y own but isnt as exciting as i was told isthis right
i supose this all depends on what you are expecting from it , aurantis are pretty docile with other fish , but hate each other , 9 times out of ten if a fish looks two big to eat in one go they just dont bother with it , if your mixing it with other fish then thats a good thing . also aurantis need floating cover in the tank to feel secure ,when they feel secure they should be hanging out under this cover for most of the day , also the hotter your water the less actice your auranti will be , they are sub-tropical fish and although they experiance near tropical temps in summer they are more active and start showing signs of breeding as the temps drop to around 18-20deg .
to be honest if you want a snakehead that is active as in swimming around all day you should you should maybe look at doing a swap for an pleuro , they are none stop and tropical , if you are looking for a snakehead that is going to attack every thing in site ,then you are probably keeping snakeheads for the wrong reason ,but you would be most happy with micro marulia or straita but theese fish come with big requirments and big responsability
like i say it all depends on what you are expection from the fish ,and how you are keeping it , a lot of people get parhana thinking there going to be exciting and then think they are boring after a few weeks , but this is mostly down to people having expectations of them that just are not true , i still get a lot of people say to me ,oh you keep snakeheads they grow massive and eat everything , well yes there is one snakehead that fits that description but there are over 32 that dont , i have a book here that i was just looking through and it has a small section on snakeheads it reads " you can be certain that you are not wronging any of them if you class the whole genus as murderous killing machines " and this is from tfh books .
so we are trying to edjicate people here and let them know this is not how they are at all , i think give your auranti some floating cover and iam sure you will learn to love him , after all a fully grown auranti is a sight to behold ,and no pictures can even start to do them justice
cheers col

I agree with tropheus, I say pleurophthalma. That's if you're looking for something that won't outgrow your tank, always active, compatible with other fish, and with nice color. Pleuro is your best bet. :)
