Hi guys, i am just getting back into fish. I had a 55 gallon tank which i let my uncle use for 2 years, and now got it back. Only thing i got back was the tank, so i am looking at getting a filter and a heater. The Stealth heaters are great. For a 55 gallon tank, I would go with 2 AC 70 filters if you want to do a monster tank. I am seriously overstocked on my 55, and I have two AC 70's and a Cascade 500 canister.
 
Thanks for the quick reply Ewurm. Forgive me for my ignorance, but what is a AC 70 filter. I am not sure if i am gonna keep monsters in here. I am gonna get a bigger tank soon, or save for a little bit bigger of one. That brings me to another question. Eventually, i would like to get a group of piranha, either 4 or 6. How big a tank would i need for them to be comfortable for life? There is a 125 gallon fish tank for sale at my local fish store for 500 firm. It includes hood and stand only. Take it or leave it guys?

AC70 = AquaClear 70 http://www.aquariumguys.com/aquaclear2.html AC110 http://www.aquariumguys.com/aquaclear3.html isn't that much more (these examples are for pictures only shop around for best prices).

On the 125g I think it looks good in the LFSs and should stay there for that price :D.

Have you checked craigslist, freecycle etc. or advertise that you want one.

Depends on the P. type you want to keep a little, but at least a 300g tank (and alot of filtration ...think 75g W/D).

A little confused about the filter still, are you guys saying to get 2 AC70's or can i just go with one AC110? 10-4 on the lfs 125 gallon tank, i was thinking the same, just wanted to get some expert advice. I have checked craigslist, no good ones in the state. I will try the other suggestions. 300 gallons, where does a guy find one of those? And what is a fair price on a 300 gallon tank? The piranha type i am leaning towards is the caribe.

Oh, i almost forgot, at what size of a tank do you start worrying about where you have to place it.

Remember.. redundency is a good thing in aquaria! SO two AC70 vs one AC110.

Hey welcome. Where are you in IL??? I would suggest looking on ebay. I have had real good luck. You just have to know where to stop bidding.
 
So then would one AC 110 be good enough to start with? If 55 gallon is the biggest size for a normal home, how does everyone keep bigger fish tanks? Thanks for the welcome Ziggy, i live by LaSalle Peru, Ottawa area. I will check out e-bay, what size have you had luck in finding on e-bay? Is shipping a killer?

I have bought one 120 and a 110 and one 75. They won't ship them. You have to go pick them up. There is an option on the ebay search that you can limit the search to 200, 250, 300 ect miles and it will filter your search. You just need to figure your gas cost into what you are bidding. How far from Quincy are you???
