Io - how big are they and how many did they eat?

They are on their own? When will you try them with other fish?

Cool indeed. I didn't mean to be a doubter, just that there are so many goliaths out there that always seem to be something else. I am by no means an expert on them.

its cool.

i was a doubter too when i heard tt there were stock of these guys.

Only after looking at them in the flesh and comparing them w a vittatus was i confident of their ID. :)

Probably dumb to say but since your in Asia you probably do have a Goliath since it seems like you guys get the best pick of the pack before it reaches state side =-(

Everytime I see a picture of Goliaths 4-sale it's always a Fishstore in either Japan, Indonesia or somewhere in ASIA.

Would be interesting to see them about 8+" or so. It seems that they develope that more squared out snout oppose to the pointy Vittatus.

Nice pick up :grinyes:

actually they are rare here too.

and this shipment was only 5-6 pces. The last shipment was a yr plus back. So they arent exactly the best of the litter.

from my observations so far, it would be interesting to see the 2 goliaths grow as one of them eats an insane amt of food while the other just eats as per normal.

So i wld prob get 2 goliaths w diff body builds later on. One fat one and a slim one.

They already have a much more blocky jaw than vittatus at this size. Teeth already very visible at a size of 3 inches.

the aquarium does in fact ship to state side. But i don't know if there are any goliaths left.

there are 5 species in the hydrocynus genus, right? Forsalki (sp) is also another that seems to come in instead of goliath.

I am very interested to see what becomes of these guys!

all the other species are striped if i'm not wrong and have v diff characters compared to these 2...

much less timid than the normal hydrocynus.

They look like these guys.... got them from one of the sponsors f the forum...:)

These hydrocynus sp. also have no stripes, but they do not look like goliaths. In fact, they might be vitattus. But, like Clay said, I too am not an expert on classifying this fish while juvenile. How much did you pay for those ?

i will snap more pics of them as they grow.

As for comming them w other tigerfish i think tts a big no no...

already they're very aggressive among themselves. Don't think a jumpy species like vittatus can take living with them.

from an article i read, juvenile goliaths have a bluish stripe on the top of their bodies and faint stripes. Plus if u notice, these guys have a much more powerful built jaw than vittatus or brevis. Plus characterwise they are much more aggressive.

i paid like US$30 for one.

first picture are the ones I got in, labeled as Goliath, but are they, they are from the Congo though.

the second, I've posted before, is what I consider goliath, and sold in Japan as such, with a hefty price tag too

ok... if u notice that in the bottom pic the tigers are much slimmer and hence give tt impression of a longer snout.

the belly looks sunken to me as if u look from the tail it angles wrong suddenly.

if u draw an imaginary curve following the curve at the base of the tail... the body shape will match the above.

my pair looks like a better fed version of the pair in the 2nd pic.

notice a visible diff in the two.... one has a more robust build while the other is slimmer and has a less chunky head.

sex difference?

dude,

according to this article based on the accounts of Douglas Dann, Goliaths originally come from the congo.

here's a set of what I consider vittatus, the first set taken back in 1998-99, they were $250.00 each, and I bought a group of them! Since there was a drought of them for at least 5 years prior to that. note the 1 megapixel picturess :)

then more recent ones from last year and this year

Like I said in another thread, you'll know with certainty in a few months as they approach 5" or so. The Goliath will not develop prominat striping where all the others will. GL

a nice 13" range vittatus, perfect fins, beauty! I will slowly reveal more details...compare this to the top photos, and compare to the smaller specimens

a pair out of a group of nice tigers...more pictures to come, stay tuned!

A true goliath in my opion for the record, compare with adult fish and multiple adult photos that I've seen, there is an eerie resemblence! 99% of the ones we see and get are not goliath even though they're labeled as such. More pictures to come...

This month alone, I've sorted through over 150 specimens, maybe the same amount last year, came up with a big fat "zero" in my opinion

When they're slightly larger it seems quite obvious the distinction between goliath and the others. The tail and the mouth of the goliath look very different.

At first I didn't notice much difference between the 2, but I wasn't really trying to find one. Looking at them carefully there is a significant difference. The goliath has a bigger curvier tail, and a more elongated dog-like mouth. And of course no stripes.

But Io's tigers seem to have the tail of a goliath but not the mouth.

It seems very clear to me that what I am seeing is to properly identify this beast. I was also made to believe at a local fish store that what they had was a goliath. Size was about 6 nches. Priced at $350.00. Those fish were long gone, and i did not buy it because I don't know what a H. Goliath looks like. I couldn't tell the difference just by looking and not seeing actual picture of the fish. But now since Wes (fugupuff) has posted pictures, I can clearly see the difference. The goliath has an elongated head. Not sure if that is visible while at 2-3inch size, or maybe even 4". But I'm sure to the trained eye, it is.

I'm not going on that limb :) It's very hard to tell just by pictures, and at that size. Time will tell, and hope that it's not a mislabeled fish.

sorry to bring up an old thread.

but how sure are you that these are h.forskalli fugupuff?

i only ask due to the fact that i have just bought the exsact same fish as the first 2 pics. he is aroud 3" at the moment.
from my reading i had started to belive that he was a h.brevis but as i said its the exsact fish you say are forskalli here.

Might be kinda tough finding fish that are illegal in your state. Last time I checked all species of Characin are banned in Tx.
