Got my order in today from Kensfish.com Hooked one up to an airpump, and the sponge stays afloat, even with the base attached to it. What am I missing? I do have the S-11 Sweetwater air blower for $250.00, haven't set it up yet. Could it be the air pump is not strong enough to keep it down?

When you put it in the tank squeeze it to get the air out. You do have the bases with them.

It was funny how mine floated untill I thought about sqeezing the air out.

Hope it helps

thats is what I was thinking.........I did the same with mine that I had

sorry if this seem's silly but how long would it take to cycle a sponge filter to get excellent benificial bacteria???? trying to convert from carbon ,basicaly remove it altogether

take the sponge and squeeze it underwater until the airbubbles come out.

Vince, yeah and if your just filling the tank with new water from the tap, your gonna have to squeeze it out every once in awhile untill all the residual air bubbles are filtered through it.

Ross, I'd give it like 3-4 weeks, before maturation. I have a sponge in every tank i keep, and you wouldn't beleive the bioload a mature sponge can support.

What sort of cleaning does a sponge filter need, if any? Would cleaning it harm teh bacteria? I always see them in breeder tanks and they never look dirty...

When you do a water change, save a bucket of water, Swirl and squeeze out the sponge filter to remove surface and some internal dirt. Then, put the sponge back in the tank. Use the bucket of water to feed/water your house or garden plants.
