New Planted tank user

What gives a stronger root base gravel or sand? I am re-setting up a 55 gal tank that i want to plant. I plan on having jack dempsys and/or oscars and was wondering if i let the plants grow for a few weeks will they be strong enough not to get tore up? Thanks for any input in advance.

Well... Sand I doubt, less obstruction, but the less obstruction also makes it easier to for them to slip right out of the sand.

I'd go with gravel to hold them down, but itd take longer for them to root.

Or go with a finer gravel, for a better hold and less root time.

Go for a plant that has strong roots and/or is sour or unpleasant tasting so the fish don't go for it. you can always go plastic....

Gravel will give the plants much more support,sand is not very good for growing plants,no nutrients,doesnt "breath".Both of those fish love to dig up plants no matter what thier planted in.Evrything Ive read or heard says theyll tear em up.

Use just regular gravel with Eco-complete mixed in or another plant substrate. Sand will work too just that you will need additional fertalizers and Co2 to grow lush plants. Roots grow very fast so don't worry about that.

Adequate light with minimal surface agitation is the best formula for a low-tech tank.
