It is possible, to a degree, although at a small size it is possible to make a mistake without experience (or, even with!).
Typically, if the fish are from the same spawn, get the largest, most colorful individual. At that size, a fish exibiting dominance over the others is most likely a male.

Possible but some what of a hit or miss if u have a spare tank or somthing of that nature keep a little group together and see who become the aggresser
