Well any plant is going to consume some nitrates and phospates, but I dont think you will get much out of bamboo. Im just guessing here, buts its a slow grower, which means it probably wont suck up that many nutrients. Try somethin faster growing.

I thought bamboo was a very fast grower?.. something like an inch a day for some species. You could also try floating plants like duckweed and watter lettuce.

Like I said I wasn't sure if it was a fast grower or not, guess it depends on the species....

I think Bamboo would look nice in a tank, but I'm not sure how it would help in cleaning water.

well the roots must be doing something, even if its slow. im just building my tank really slow because of low budget. im starting with bamboos because they are a buck a piece and look intresting, maybe ill post some pics. i only have 48 watts on a 55 gallon, so plants with high light requirements i cant have. probally gonna get some wendtii's, ive always had good luck with those.

I have used bamboo before, both dried out and live. have never had a problem with live bamboo, the dried out stuff does not work well at all. with the live bamboo just make sure it is not comletly submerged and it should be ok.

bamboo will work fine

ONE MAJOR PROBLEM!!!

if you leave a top of the tank eventually something will jump out. we have all experienced it.

i know gachuas can jump, but im leaving the water level down just for that purpose.

I also bought some bamboo from walgreens (lucky bamboo... $15 for like 20 stalks or somthing like that). I like the look of it and it seems to be easy to grow n very low light. It's been sitting in a tank with about 2 inches of water with little to no light (katrina) for about 3 weeks now and greener than ever! Not sure on how its growing a of now though.

I have the lucky bamboo that looks exactly like the kind in this threat submerged, and is also fine.

bamboo does not rot under water, it is actually farmed and grown in fairly deep water with only the tops sticking out, if you have that whole plant it grows really fast..if you just have stalks it grows slow

I agree. The bamboo will live submerged for about a year, but after that it starts rotting.

You guys may remember the other thread, but this is in fact a terrestrial plant - Dracaena sanderiana, and comes in both green, and variegated forms. It will eventually rot in time. (As you can see in some of the pictures, some is already looking pretty poorly.) But enjoy it while you can - it's nice stuff.

my friend once had about 20 in his 90 gallon tank and they did alright for about 20 months and then they started to die off. they would never reach the top of the tank
