not sure...kinda doubting it since he is so much thicker and he says it is his "new gar" and he has had his avatar for a while now...Are you sure it isn't a characin??

my computer monitor at work is very dark and hard to see. ill have to take a closer look when i get home...unless someone else id's it before then.

well he is in a 60G and i went to my LFS and aked him but he hasent got back to me yet and i hope he doesnt cost to much

my only guess would be to try and prevent people from releasing a non-native species into CA waterways. i could be wrong though.

true gar are available quite often in CA, but it is illegal for the LFS to sell them and for you to buy them.

i would probably not discuss that too much on a public forum. people have been busted on public forums in the past for possesing illegal fish. there is a thread or sticky somewhere on here about that. just a bit of advice.

that's cause people mistake them for gars instead of charcins. Gars (Ginglymodi) belong to the family Lepisosteidae and there are only 7 species of true gars(and several hybrids)
Atractosteus Spatula --alligator gar
Atractosteus Tristoechus --cuban gar
Atractosteus Tropicus --Tropical gar
Lepisosteus Platyrinchus --florida gar
Lepisosteus Occulatus --spotted gar
Lepisosteus osseus --longnose gar
Lepisosteus platostomus --shortnose gar
notice you dont see needlenose there:)

I always see true gars at my LFS he had a 8 inch spoyyed florida gar and it was $75 looked pretty nice though but i never bought a True Gar From any of my LFS Just This morning my hujeta gar died by my jardini so no more tankmates for him
