I was wondering that myself considering my wallago has eaten two aros both at the 10" range. a green terror and a bunch of black convicts.

I think the only reason any fish are alive in this tank is because of the amount of food he consumes every day 7 large prawns and a hand full of pre-cooked shrimp.

11-03-2007, 1:24 PM
how does your artc live with those "gars"? I had a 12" artc in a 125 with my peacock bass for a bit and even though the bass were the same size as him he would constantly screw with them, i had to give him away.

Mystus Redtail
11-03-2007, 1:29 PM
well, for the most part he doesn't really bother them. They've all been together for about 10 months. Sometimes at night he'll chase them around, I hear a lot of splashing, but he's only chased 1 out of the tank twice in the last 6 months. Last Wednesday it happened, and the gar was missing some scales. But I got a lid on friday, so i'll hope for the best.
I'm afraid that its only a matter of time until one of them turns up missing. But as long as i keep the artc well fed I'm not too worried.

Mystus Redtail

thanks, i bought him about 3 years ago at around 5-6 inches i believe. Hes now approximately 14 inches, fairly slow grower for the species. When i picked him up he had a nasty case of HLLE which is just starting to cure now. Hopefully he will grow out more.
Love the pics of your attu, those things are great. I invested in one some years ago but they ship horribly and he never fully recovered from the stress. Hope to pick up another one someday.

It will be 2' in a little over a year, it will easily reach 3 feet and can reach 4 or 5 feet.
You should have done some research.

My biggest cat is only 9" right now, so I don't think that it qualifies as a monster.

Not necessarily true. I currently have a 1 1/2 yr old @ 18", and my buddy has one thats over 3 yrs old and still under 2'. I haven't seen the hybrid vigor everyone talks about. My RTC's and Marble cat grow much faster that these.

never had the tank space for a monster cat but i think this little guy deserves some respect. We was brought home in with feeders a year ago at 0.5 inches long and put in a 75g full of african cichlids. I didnt know he survived till i emptied the tank 4 monthes later to upgrade to a 150. i kinda thought he had died recently after not seeing him since i put african back in my 150. I was doing some cleaning and saw him so i caught him in gave him his own 2.5g intank refuguim.

Joey,
I am so incredibly jealous of that hybrid. If you ever need to rehome it, or it dies unexpectedly please contact me. Don't know if you have seen my catfish anatomy thread, but it would be exciting to work on that hybrid. I've done both niger and tsn skulls before. Thinking of them combine boggles the mind lol. Guess you are one of the rare few with a larger tsn x niger hybrid, and I am one of the few with a larger marble x rtc hybrid. Hope he gets huge, and keep us updated here in the catfish section.

I have had mine for about the same length of time. I have finally managed to get mthem to hand feed, but it took so long, they are extremly skittish at times.

I don't know if they are able to be bred in a tank though. All I have ever heard is that due to the size of breeding adults you need a small pond, have a sudden change in salinity (to create the feel of changing seasons) and have a temp of 32 degrees. But i bet it is just lack of ol' boots and shopping trolleys.

Hey nice catfish collection! :headbang2 but im pretty sure that RTC is not 11"...as mines close to that size or is at that size already but it does not look thin and pale and colorless like mines...mines is all fat and colored up with a red tail...your's still looks like its still forming its color right now and looks small still...it may be a 7-9" but not an 11"...you can see the colors on mines that your is still developing....and as for your electric catfish! Man its looking great! :headbang2and nice upside down catfish!

He's in a 55gal at the moment, once he outgrows that he's either going in a 120 gal or my 1150gal pond.
Do you have any photos of your Salmontails?

Theres a cpl of shonky pics of mine of page 16 of this thread. I want 2 update them soon once I can get them pose nicely...
I got my two from a workmate bout 18 months ago, awesome pets.
1of the two had him self a nasty burn from the heater not long ago, turned into a messy gash but they heal quickly, Ive learnt to keep the ph round about 8 as their coats will dry up in acidic water, I noticed the feeder fish in the background of yours, mine get them a few a fortnite,

Hi TLkmDN & BaTsBR,

Bought this guy 15 June '07 sized 2". Been feeding fresh red chicken liver and small pieces of fish meat from day 1 till now. I never feed this guy with live fish not even once. Last 3 mths only feed on alternate days sometimes chicken liver and following week with market fish. Now feeding every 2 days.

When small, have to cut the chicken liver into small pieces, the same goes with the fish meat. But now, big piece of chicken liver or the whole fish 6" minus the head and stomach content easily one gulp.

After cutting the chicken liver into small pieces, wash again the excess blood otherwise it will make your water cloudy faster. Choose fresh RED liver when buying, dark brown indicates it's not fresh. Maximum 7 days you can keep it in the freezer. IMPORTANT : Removed all fats sticking on the liver before feeding your catfish.

All my other catfish never ever resist chicken liver, perhaps TLkmDN can give a try on your TSN but first, starved your TSN for few days.

Have tried, actually testing feeding small pieces of chicken meat, beef heart, beef meat, squid and small shrimp....WoW!!!! this guy eats everything..no fussy, easy to take care off, the problem is $$$$ expensive!!! Better to feed my family rather than feeding this beast with expensive foods.

Chicken liver now cost RM 4.50 ( USD 1.40 ) per kg and will last a week if feeding once DAILY for my 23" RTC. He eats all kind of fish but for the fish,
I'll buy the cheapest type of fish available at the market.

Maybe the chicken liver and fishes that have more blood like tuna, sardines, walking catfish that makes the red tail colour brighter.

Adios.

Nice.
I fed my two RTC with chicken meat and fish fillet too. Actually, one of them start eating some earthworms, the other don't seen to like it.
they got about 8" and are just 2 months or less with me. Everybody in home like them.
The TSNs are making me worry, they don't seen to eat, BUT they're not getting thinner. They're are relly slow growers.
TKS for the infos man, hope mine gets this color on the tail.
