The Weekly Loach

Here is the place to view your weekly loach blog.
I'll start with diet. I believe diet is very important when it comes to loach color and health.
The keys to success are variety and quality. Don't cheap out on food. Loaches will accept almost any type of fish food. If you want to bring out those great orange, black and red colors you will want to feed a variety of foods. My loaches enjoy a mix of flakes, sinking pellets, tablets, veggies, frozen food and seafood.
Here is my suggestion for a quality loach diet:
Omega One Flakes: I include their color flakes, Veggie Flakes, and Freshwater flakes.
Pellets: I am currently using Dainichi Cichlid XL, Hikari Carnivore, and Hikari Massivore.
Tablets: I currently use Ocean Nutrition Bottom Dweller wafers, and I am also giving Sera Viformo Bottom Dweller tablets a try. I have seen success so far with both.
Frozen: Krill are devoured by my larger loaches. All of my loaches eat Bloodworms, Mysis shrimp, Brine shrimp, and krill
Veggies: Did you know that loaches love veggies too? I feed Zucchini and Cucumber
Seafood: Mussels are a favorite treat for my loaches. I buy frozen green mussels on the half shell for a real feeding frenzy. A great way to bulk up your loaches.
Other: I also buy large smelt. If you cut open the belly of the large females, you will usually find a great amount of eggs. These make for great loach bulking food.

I actually changed my CL's diet to something similar after reading this... they seem to be doing much better and are quite more colorful [less stressed from the better diet i presume]Posted 02-11-2008 at 1:52 PM by sardesign

Clown loaches are awesome and hearty, you should also look into weather loaches or DOJO's i have 20 gallon with 2 weather loaches an albino weather loach, 1 clown loach, 2 kuhli loaches, and a yoyo loach. It was my first tank and they are great fish to start with because they are tough, and very active.Posted 05-25-2008 at 11:21 AM by kalensocha
