I currently have a 40g that my oscar and plec will be moved out of shortly. I have kept sunnies before, but it was a lone bluegill who i relocated to a friends empty koi (now my sunny/lmb) pond and now that the tank is going to be empty ive been looking at sunnies again. I couldn't help but see brian zimmermans Missouri longears and their spectacular male colorations. This tank is going to become a show tank and not a breeding setup so i was wondering how many males i could keep in that tank. Should their be females? The tank is going to be chilled and it wont go through seasons, staying in fall temperatures to prevent spawning behaviors. If females are necessary for a peacefull setup than so be it.
Any additional thoughts/suggestions are appericiated.

After a few years of trying to find a carp small enough to keep in my possession the search was over yesterday. I went out yesterday to try and catch a few but I noticed that I was getting a lot of short runs and pickups but no hook ups. After hooking a 5lber I caught what I thought was a bluegill seeing it come in through the water and it turned out to be a small juvenile carp. In a mad scramble to figure out what to put him in to transport him home he threw the hook which didn't bother me much because he was foul hooked under the pec fins. So right as I was packing up I get another around 8lbs and noticed my one rod kept getting picked up but the fish wouldn't run far so I assumed it spat the hook. So finally I decided bring that rod in and leave and I'm reeling it in and the lines going all over the place but it didn't feel big sure enough it was another juvenile and I found a bucket in the woods filled that up and transported him home. I was so lucky to find that bucket because I had no clue I'd catch one that size let alone two so collecting was the last thing in my mind. Other than that he looks great in my tank just got home from college for the summer added a sand bottom and got a few more plants. Don't know how long I'll keep him for may swap him out if I get a smaller one I have a pond to put them in but for the time being I'm really happy and excited I got one.

Alright, after a long time of researching and fishing/collecting, I've finally got baby bowfin. I know the mortality rate of them are high, so I got lots. 15 in my 20 gallon long, and about 400 in my pond. Three very small injured ones I didn't spect to live already died. There are two more that I expect the same of. Most are about 3/4 of an inch long with a few being bigger. One is about two inches. They are on day three and are eating worms cut up in to mm long pieces. I raise the worms myself. I am also doing 35 percent water changes daily. I am currently building a 400 gallon pond for the ones in my tank. It will be done in late July. I will post updates every day, likely around 8:00 am. Pics are bad right now and will be uploaded soon.

It's been a 3 month long hunt, but I've finally got some baby bowfin. I went out to a local lake and waded around in the marshy coves for an hour, until I finally found a ball of baby's. I was promptly attacked by the daddy bowfin, but I managed to scoop up about 500 of them in one scoop. When I got home I put 10 in my 20 gallon long I just got. The rest I put in my pond as backups in case all the ones in the tank die. Before y'all all try and flame me I'm going to go ahead and say the 20 gallon is a grow out. I'm building another pond that I'm gunna put them in. This will be in about 2 months. I've read on how hard it is to keep bowfin fry, and on how the mortality rate of the bowfin fry is very high. This is why I put the 400 or so others in my pond. About half of those will be eaten by my bass. I plan on feeding them mosquito fish from my pond and chopped earth worms daily. I will also do a 35 percent water change every day because I am aware of how much waste they produce. I think I'm going to start a progress thread of the bowfin growth. I know how hard this is going to be and am expecting the worse and hoping for the best. If y'all have any extra advice or tips please let me know.

Hello,

Last thread I made really pissed me off. I said I wouldn't post here anymore but for the good of my fish I will.

I started this thread to find out how you all feed your sunfish. I'm planning on keeping my fish on all live food.

I'll be breeding crayfish and using the young for food as well as European night crawlers.
I thought some kind of insect would be good to breed as well. Any suggestions? I'd prefer something that could be bred outside.

Also,
My stock in a 75 gallon right now is
1 redbreast
1 pumpkinseed
2 green sunfish x pumpkinseed hybrids

And I'm hoping to catch a bullhead cat as well.
Is that list good or should I pick up more sunnies?
