Hi All,
In habits, appearance, and evolutionary history, the African Butterfly Fish, Pantodon buchholzi, is one of the most unusual of all aquarium species. Yet despite having been in the trade for over 100 years, this “freshwater flying fish” (a misnomer, see below) gets little attention. Captive breeding is challenging but possible, and its fantastic hunting behaviors are thrilling to observe. I helped to set up an African Butterfly Fish exhibit at the Bronx Zoo, and was not at all surprised when it became a great favorite. Most of the visitors I spoke with were astonished to learn that such an “exotic” creature, worthy of a large zoo exhibit, was available at many pet stores! Have read they grow smaller than the reg Giant Gourami and get about 20inches. I am getting interested in this fish because of its personality and size. But there is a lot of contradicting info on these, some say that it is a gentle giants and would do well with other fish that are big, and some say they are very aggressive and could kill other fish like oscars. I have a 180g. Tank with 1 Oscar, 1 Chocolate, 1 Blue Acara, 3. Small Datnoids and some Silver Dollars.I know in order to possibly get a Giant Gourami the Chocolate might have to go or would it? My other Gills
is, would the Gourami do well with these tank mates or not? Like I said, there's a lot of different opinions on this fish. If there's Anyone with experience or knowledge of these fish could you let me know some info and what to expect. I am not sure if I would get one, but I am interested in learning more. Thanks

I didn't know where specifically to ask this question but I was recently given 3 young tinfoil barbs. I was told they were "Red tailed tinfoils" which I'm hoping they are since the redtails top out at around 9 inches give or take an inch. If they are regular tinfoil barbs (barbonymus schwanenfeldii I can't spell it...) then they will grow well over a foot. I've been told that a way to tell the difference between them is in the tail...if you guys know a specific section on the forum that this would be better in please let me know... So what is this fish, barbonymus schwan-whatever, or is it a barbonymus altus??
