About 6 weeks ago I came across a local guy trying to get rid of a JD. Turns out it was an 8-9" male...I already had a 6-7" female. So I thought that I would put them together...and see what happens.

Believe it or not...it was love at first sight! :hearts: The female absolutely loved him from the second I put him in...and he didn't seem to mind her either. She followed him everywhere he went in the tank...from moment #1...and continued this for the last 5-6 weeks.

I've heard of all sorts of complex parameters/odds against two fish pairing up...so I guess I got really really really lucky that these two guys were/are so compatible!:)

I basically dedicated a 55 gallon tank to them...specifically for the purposes of them hopefully breeding. So it's been about 5-6 weeks...and even though they were getting along fantastically...I was starting to lose hope that they would ever breed. I tried many of the "tricks":

- increased the water temp
- large flat rock in the tank
- caves
- flower pots
- even taping a small mirror to the aquarium glass...to get the male "excited"

Of course all this time both the male & female have constantly been moving the aquarium stones/gravel around...but nothing else. Then yesterday (just casually passing the tank)...I see out of the corner of my eye what looks like common aquarium crud laying on the bottom of the tank. But just for the heck of it I take a closer look...and it's a while bunch of eggs!!! Very exciting!!

Of course they totally ignored the flat rock & the flower pot...and just laid the eggs on the bare aquarium bottom (cleared of gravel of course).

So it's been about 24 hours. Since I've read that it takes about 48-72 hours for the eggs to hatch (water temp is about 82-83°F)...about 24-48hours to go. Almost all the eggs are tan colored (very few white ones). So I figure most of them are viable fertilized eggs.

So here's the part you've been waiting for...pictures!:) First photo is of the female & the eggs...2nd photo is of the male (right of photo) and female (on the left):
Just joined and hoping some more experienced people may be able to help

I think i have a pregnant Exodon and not sure what to do next

Keeping them has proved difficult,i had 30 in 3x2x2 tank, bought about 8 months ago or so,down to 14,no loses for last 3 months

One of them has a definate 'waddle' when swimming and is fatter than the others

Information on internet is a bit sketchy so.......

Anyone know how long roughly before they spawn?

Should i remove lone fish?

While they all harass each other on a regular basis this one isn't letting anything near it,i don't have a lot of cover in tank and assuming the minute any eggs are laid they will be eaten
If i remove lone fish is it likely to stress as naturally a shoaling fish? and if removed and doesn't prove to be pregnant are the others going to view it as food when i try to re introduce it back into tank(could i use a small spawning net thing inside of main tank? or would it eat its own eggs, quite confused!!!)
Thanks
Mark

Hello all,
I am knew to monster fish keepers and am just learning how to navigate it. I purchased a 8 inch cream sickle Midas in January and keep him/her alone in a 55 gallon. I am unsure if it is a male or a female. It does not have the signature hump on its head and does not have long fin extensions which leads me to think it is a female. it's breeding tube is visible and I know female's breeding tubes are shorter and him/her tube appears short and round, but I could not find any pictures on the web to compare it to so i am unsure of the gender.Any information on sexing midas cichlids would be much appreciated. Also I plan to bred him/her and would like to know if a 55 gallon tank is large enough. She/he is 8 inches btw. And if the tank is big enough where would be a good source to obtain a breeding partner?

Thanks

All of them were raised on NLS and are about 5 months old. I also have 3, year old female convicts from a previous spawn that I'd like to get rid of also.

So what do you think is a good price to sell them at. 10 decent sized juvenile convict cichlids, and 3 semi-adult females. About 4 males, all the rest are female.

I was wondering, I've had this pair of Convicts for a while now. I setup everything that is necessary to get them into the mating mood as informed by the employee who bagged them for me when i bought them. The employee told me the female was his, but he put it back for on stock, that she spawned before just fine. I think she might be ready just about now.

Some traits shes been showing is that she chases the male alot. She beats him up, but just recently the male started to "man up" Now they just spin in circle like a happy couple.

Another is that shes always hiding in the clay pot i have for her. I have a Jack Dempsey in there also (Male) just temporarily, and everytime it would swim past the pot, the female convict would chase it away. It would expand its gills wide, like trying to intimidate the JD or something.

Is this any possible signs that she may lay soon? Because I recently built a rack for my "fish room" and i was planning on cleaning all of the tanks before i set them up, i dont want to ruin the mood for the Convicts..

Thanks for the help guys! Ask me anything if you need info!

So i was wondering,
I have lots of fertile male flowerhorn and texas, and I have heard of goldfish breeders "milking" their fish for sperm. So I was wondering if anyone on here has done this.. Milked sperm from a fertile male and added it to sterile eggs

Any response? I am afraid that if they spawned again the stress of trying so hard to get babies may make them sick, and they are my best parrots so I would like to do something like this

I have a pair of peacock bass that are spawning for me every 3 and a half weeks. My problem is getting the fry to survive. After a week to 10 days they slowly start dieing off slowly, which I think is from starvation. The last batch I was feeding live baby brine and frozen baby brine but I believe they may have been too large. The fry would swim into the cloud of food but didn't seem to be eating it. This batch I am trying hikari's first bites and frozen rotifers, and once they get a little bigger I will try to incorporate the baby brine again. Should I use anything else? The fry once again seem to be eating both the rotifers and first bites but both the fry and food is so small I am not 100% sure they are eating. Please help, I'll try anything, I am getting sick and tired of losing batch after batch of fry.
