You can sterilize the plants with a bleach solution. One part bleach to 19 parts water. Soak the plants for one to three minutes. Works for most any aquatic plant. After soaking, rinse plant in fresh water before adding to aquarium.

I usually have a 5 gallon bucket, I scoop the duck weed, change the water. Duck weed will grow in the bucket. The other things tend to get diluted out. Before I place in my tank I scoop and run under the warmer water just as a final rinse then in it goes... so far so good.

Before you add duckweed, this is what I take out every other day to keep it from blocking out the light so much that I can't see the fish. It also holds surface tension (hinders oxygen exchange) and allows algae to grow on the surface. If you don't want to spend 20 minutes skimmimg the water surface, leave it out.

You can, I didn't get it all, and in 2 days, the surface on the 125 gal tank will again be covered in it.
