Zebra tankmate?
Zebras do best in a species tank as they do not compete well for food. Royal would be a bad idea as completely different diet requirements

What are smaller species of Plecos?
I don't think a pleco that reaches 1 foot can be considered small.. Look at the following genus. - Parotocinclus - Otocinclus - Hypancistrus
