Four tropical gars, one florida gar, ~12"-15"

Thanks for the shout-outs in the thread! I'm catching up. I think the ID issues have been addressed, that earlier "record" photo is definitely a Longnose Gar, and the later "record" photo is a Florida Gar. Fun Fact: we got the "world record" size Longnose Gar changed this past year at IGFA...

Gar Identification - Post your Gar to be ID'd HERE!!

guppies/rosies are your best bet at that size, although you can experiment giving the ALG frozen krill too (some will transition directly to freeze dried krill as well). once you get the gar off live food, it will eat virtually anything from sinking to floating pellets (and any frozen foods...

lets see your biggest gars and bowfins all species

I've kept all 7 gar species (plus several hybrids) and Bowfin, but this was the biggest I've personally encountered - fishing trip last September :)

Four tropical gars, one florida gar, ~12"-15"

Hi Viktor, Glad to help however I can! With Spotted Gars you can likely collect them in the wild (check local laws first) as they spawn in shallow water and the young of the year (YOY) remain in those areas until they reach 6-10". In Florida, most gars that look like Spotted Gars are in fact...

Gar Identification - Post your Gar to be ID'd HERE!!

Most likely a Longnose Gar; given when the original photos were posted, by now we should know for certain with updated photos.-- --Solomon

Gar Identification - Post your Gar to be ID'd HERE!!

That is definitely a Longnose Gar; can easily grow over 1.5' even in captivity (but of course very unlikely to reach near the "72 inch wild max").-- --Solomon

Four tropical gars, one florida gar, ~12"-15"

I look forward to checking out your video; wanted to address the Spotted vs Florida Gar and Tropical Gar - "common vs. Mexican" items first: 1. You are correct, true Spotted Gars are actually quite rare in the hobby. Mainly because not many are interested in them, and Florida Gars, nearly...

    Just another gar ID thread

Given the image and price, I would say this is very likely a Florida Gar (most commonly available gar in the hobby). Reasonable price, and don't get as large as some of the other species (Longnose Gar or Alligator Gar). Hope that helps!-- --Solomon

Gar Conservation vs Bowfishing - Protecting Native Species

Hi All, It's been a while since I have checked in on the forum, but the place looks great! I will comment further soon, and hope to be more active once again. I wanted to start by bringing your attention to a recent media article on conservation of native species, particularly gars (and buffalo...

    Fish expert blasts bowfishing tournament

Thanks for the support! I'll comment further soon, but just wanted to say thanks for posting! I've been off the forum for a while since I've been busy with work (primarily migratory fishes in the Great Lakes, but finally some more gar/bowfin work recently). The new forum looks great, and I hope...

    Gar ID

^Florida Gars. 99% of gars in the trade that look like this are Florida Gars, although often questioned to be Spotted Gars (SPG is actually pretty uncommon in the hobby). Hope that helps!-- --solomon

    Spotted gar tail bitten off

-gar will be just fine, primary finnage will grow back with no problems. the tail filament will not grow back, usually once that is lost (through natural degeneration/damage/etc) it will not grow back. there is no size at which if the tail filament is broken, the gar will die. best of luck...

    Cuban and Tropical gar hybrid

-this is definitely an unusual fish; initially i would have thought odd tropical, but it does show some characteristics of a juvenile CBG (such as the light dorsal stripe, which we see in ALG/CBG, but not in TPG). are there any recent pics? i wasn't aware of any farming of Cuban Gars outside...

    Mystery Gar… Tropical?

-nice looking gars for sure! further development will tell us for sure, so please do keep us posted. from initial images, it's important to remember that Tropical Gars are highly variable in pattern, particularly when young. For now, I would assume just a variant Tropical Gar (we see a lot of...

Help with white spot on gar's head

-hard to say from this image, but it looks like the fins are worn away to nubs on this fish, is that the case? please provide some additional full-body shots of the fish as well as the fins. these issues may be indicative of a larger problem. also, what are the tankmates of this fish? are...

    Poster of Gar

-agreed with Polypterus on this. I know both of the artists and as stated beforehand, MANY organizations/sites (including PrimitiveFishes.com/Lepisosteidae.net...both of which have reps on MFK) have paid appropriate fees to use these images. This poster (and posting it to the membership) does...

This is how you photograph a 70cm "snow" gator gar!

-awesome pics as always man! will be in touch about a couple things (sorry have been all over the place lately; currently hitting 3 diff universities in Wisconsin after coming off the ECMFK this past weekend). again, great shots! don't worry, i'm confident you will get back to the gars when the...

    Red spot on dorsal fin

-great pics and fish! as Amy had mentioned, my guess is that this is some sort of anomaly with the blood vessels in the fin (at least from what we can see via photos and not in person). that being said, there are plenty of weird patches of color that gars can develop...have had some fish with a...
