I've had 3 at different times. Never had much luck with them. The first one lasted probably 3 or 4 months. The last one lasted 8 months. I never could any of them to eat consistently. Sometimes I could get them to take a bloodworm or 2 and that's about it. I'm sure they eventually starved.

Yep. You also need to rake through the sand from time to time to prevent gas pockets, if it's over 3" or so deep.

My guess would be you're getting air into the system somewhere. Maybe a hose is loose on the intake side. Or maybe the seals around the quick disconnect are leaking a bit. Sorry..It's white with a little black peppered in here and there. It's heavy also, you can stir it and it settles right back without clouding the water. Believe I gave about $5 for a 50 lb bag at Lowes.
