Anyone have any say on what shape is better, cylinder or rectangular? I'm aware the curved acrylic on the cylinder can contort the view but as far as upkeep would the shape have any difference in maintenance or better/worse flow patterns? No stock list to consider at this time.

No, either will be the same maintenance since both are a vessel to hold life. Flow can be properly setup in either, and I'm a big fan of gyre flow (which doesn't have to come from a special gyre pump). The only real difference in a cylinder vs a rectangle tank is a cylinder will cost many more times what a rectangle aquarium of similar volume will. That is why cylinders aren't near as common.
