I'm struggling to make a stockman standpipe and the durso is just too big at 1.5" for the eshopps overflow box. What else can I do?? I went to Lowes and home depot and struggled for two hours fitting PVC together only to leave empty handed both times.

I was trying to use 1.5" PVC, 2" coupling, and 2" x1.5" reducer bushing. I also tried the rubber gasket from a repair coupling, with a 2" coupling and the 2" coupling was too big!

Do you guys have any suggestions?

Putting a PVC cap over an overflow can dampen the sound.(a 2" cap over a 1.5 might fit)
First pics are on a stand pipe. A strainer is used in order to balance the PVC cap on, without impeding flow.

now in an overflow box, there is a strainer under the cap here too.

If you do this, the strainer must be regularly checked for debris that can cause blockage.

That's basically a stockman, only simpler. What would I make the strainer out of?

The strainers similar to the one in the 1st photo above are fairly inexpensive, and available on-line.
Google aquarium strainers (PVC).
But you can make your own from PVC fittings like the one below, I made using a dremel type tool.
