I have a similarly sized tank, 84x18x18. Turned it into a river setup. Love it. 18 inches is plenty deep for almost any livestock you'd have, and makes aquascaping the tank and maintaining it much easier.

Fast fish are great to see in a long tank like that. A school of freshwater barracudas would be awesome, albeit difficult to keep. Denison barbs, bala sharks or tinfoil barbs would look pretty cool too.

My "big fish" tank would house a Pike Cichlid and Red Terror pair. if that combo would even work.

Like Allan said a school of Silver Dollars would be cool but only if you don't use plants.

If you want a group of fish, you could do some Geophagus type or my favorite, Thorichthys.

Big Discus schools area always nice.
