Get extra prime for water changes. As you are going though this change, you are going to have to watch your parameters very closely, and may have to do a few extra water changes.

I'll go get some lava rock this am, and get that going in the sump, and start adding a little bit of tap water as well. Anything else you guys suggest to do today? Hopefully the bacteria grows quickly in the rock.
I don't use lava rock but it's old school method. Get about 200-300 pot scrubbies and trust me those things do wonders

Was able to get 20# of lava rock into the sump. Did another water change, and added some tap water. I'll keep updating. Thanks again.

What are your current tank parameters? Including ph, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, and hardness if you have it. It's good to get a baseline so you can see how much has been changed. Would love some pics too!

Well, looks like PH isn't really reading. .less than 6, ammonia .50, nitrite is 0 and nitrate 20.

Tank is a little cloudy from the lava rock, even though i ran a hose through buclets of it for an hr. I'll post pics once it clears.

It will take a while for the tank to clear all the way. On the upside, lava rock is inert. It won't affect your water parameters at all. Looks like your ammonia jumped a bit with the addition of the tap. How much did you add?

Any update?
Last night ph was back down to a 6, ammonia down to .25 and nitrites 0 ppm and nitrates were high....Just now, ph is the same, ammonia .5, nitrites 0 and nitrates dropped. I didn't do a water change yesterday, so I did one just now. Adding less and less rodi water.

However, the gar is looking much better and is more active....actually all the fish are more active.

Good. Keep on it! It might help to pick up a bottle of seachem stability or brightwell aquatics microbactr7. Both work very well for boosting the nitrogen cycle.
