June 10 2016, a small update on the "peaceful" community / grow out 4500 gal, tank #21

Sorry about inconsistent quality. I'm still experimenting with cameras. This is SJCAM 5000X.

Looking good, how big are those black-eared Sharks supposed to get?

Kittiee Katt Kittiee Katt That is probably the most blindingly-dazzling and undeserving compliment I've ever received in my 44 years on earth!! You coming from Down Under just for my wretch of a project? :) A marvel that eclipses all USA has to offer, like Great Canyon and Georgia Aquarium hahaha But in the name of not hurting your feelings I'll take it, M'am. Appreciate it!

if i am ever going to the US again i am going to visit you, this project is awesome in so many ways, housing these fish well and being so big!

How much water changing do you do though? it seems like a load of fish in there :)
well good luck

Everything's set up to be done largely without my involvement. Drip, or rather run system changes 100% water roughly every 2 weeks . A hose in the sump and a sump overflow, is all.

Four filtration systems:

- 1000 gal = two 240 gal + sump
- 1500 gal = two 240 gal + sump
- 2000 gal = six 240 gal + sump
- 20,000 gal = two 4500 gal + sump

Total ~25,000 gal so far.

The koi pond will add ~15,000 gal but I plan to have the overflow from the four systems directed into the koi pond and then that will overflow to ground.

I'd use a higher turnover but the bottleneck is my RO water production. I'm set up to produce 10,000 GPD of RO water with 6 low pressure membranes when the membranes are fresh. Mine are getting old and clogged up with calcium deposits. Current production is only ~2000 GDP.

Every membrane runs ~$250 self-installed and ~$850 installed by a professional. Not that affordable to change often even DIY.

My nitrates are 5 ppm or less. Hence, so far we are coping.

To adjust the hardness, buffer, pH in my tank water, I add about 1/5 of raw well water to the RO output. My well water is extremely hard and low end brackish at 1400 ppm TDS of which 500 ppm is hardness (Ca and Mg). It has sulfur (taken out by a charcoal filter); tannin - slight yellowish hue; and 0.5 ppm ammonia so needs to go into the sump.
