Hey guys, how common is it for a ray to have a miscarriage ? What are the known causes ?

This evening a few hours after lights out on the tank I noticed it had gotten very cloudy. Went to investigate and found this.

A week or so ago I noticed my male P-14 chasing my female P-13 and decided to sell him as I don't have another suitable tank to put him in now. He is still chasing her a little now. I'm guessing that is the cause of this. Just finished doing a large water change to start cleaning up the tank.

Opinions...

man you should keep that p14 and let it happen again. i think its fairly normal to have issues on first pregnancy. My leo/hen had a still birth on her first litter, and my female p14, had a pup die inside her and kill her on her first pregnancy as well.

sorry for the loss

With her last litter, my hystrix gave birth to 5 healthy pups and 3 still borns. They looked similar to your picture above. It didn't appear that she was under any stress during the pregnancy, so I figure it's just one of the things that Mother Nature does and we can't understand why.

Did all the rays come out at one time or did she spit out the still borns first?

Most came out at one time. She gave birth at night, so didn't get to see which were born first. When I checked on the tank early morning, I found the five live ones and 2 dead ones. A few (2, I think) days later she released 2 more dead pups.

How big was she? Wonder if she just didn't have the ability to carry and nurish 9 pups?
