Can someone please help us identify what type of gar this is? I've been searching online and am having trouble figuring it out. It was labeled in store as an alligator gar but not sure if this was accurate.20160823_114739.jpg 20160822_115602.jpg

Hope you got a big tank ready for that guy, coz while he looks pretty small right now, he will soon be a beast ;)

at first, I was thinking Spotted or Florida, but then I scrolled down to 2nd picture, and definitely Alligator Gar - the mouth is a dead give-away - always has a hooked overbite on the top jaw.

What state/region are you located? This fish will likely top 5-6 feet, but is rumored to grow even 12-14'. They aren't necessarily fast growers, but it will need VERY large tank, likely will need to be custom built, or a pond but I have seen a member w/ a really cool swimming pool for his fish in the basement.....even then, 10' diameter and 3' deep is still pushing it. That fish will eventually grow MASSIVE and weigh a few hundred pounds.

Thanks everyone. We know it will get big eventually and have it in a big tank already but are prepared to get a bigger tank or pond at some point. We also just got a Florida Gar of the same size... will they be okay in a tank together? Also we want to possibly get 2-4 piranhas. Can they all live together in one tank if the tank is big enough and they are of similar size?

Piranha are a species only. No mixing with other fish like gars.

Eventually one will die even same size.

Gator and Florida will be ok for a while till the gator gar outgrows eventually.
