Oahu, Hi.
Is that not a little overkill for tanks that size?
It isn't at all. I have a 2217 (with a 2215 impeller) on a Mr. Aqua 11.5 gallon rimless tank with a lilly pipe outflow. The biggest tank I have a 2217 on is a 30 gallon. I used a spray bar attachment. It seemed to produce better outflow and even then I use a couple Marineland power heads with sponges on both corners. Lol.
You can get the 2215 and upgrade the impeller to a 2217 if you feel the flow is weak... But that really doesn't make sense since you can get the 2217 and use the 2215 impeller to reduce the flow. Bigger canister space with the 2217.
Fact: The impellers on the 2215 and 2217 are interchangeable.

You aren't wrong about the flow being low.

You can never have too much filtration, especially if you are densely stocked, or stock predators. I've even had my guy from the local pet store that I trust try to sell me on a Fluval FX6 for a 55gal tank.

Also, I would rather have too much water flow and throttle it back on the return line than to not have enough. You can always reduce the water flow, but a given pump can't pump any more (without mods such as larger impellers).

Just my $.02

Eheim is the way to go if you have the $
They are middle of the road price wise
If you are stretching the $, Aquatop or their Chinese counterpart SunSun is a reliable decent canister

I do always over filter also
2217 on a 75 gallon
2215 on a 46 gallon bow
Aquatop CF400UV on my 60 hex
I'm running an undergravel, no power heads on a 20 hex
The bigger the canister the bigger the more biological filtration you have
On bigger tanks
I always run 2filters at least
