Butterfly fish would work well, as would the leopard bush fish. Channa bleheri is the only snakehead I would be tempted to try, otherwise one of the smaller Cichlids something like a firemouth or blue acara though mix up the decor before putting them in to upset the sharks territory.

Easiest way is to look at the dorsal fin, males extend to a point and females are rounded. If they are small in the shop sub adult males may not be quite so obvious in which case get a couple that you think are females to pair with your male, then remove the others when a pair forms.
