    Help ID my Geophagus

Like Crenicichla, Guianancara are in the same "tribe" as Geophagus, but not closely related. Considered more closely related to Acarichthys heckelii, both in their own sub-group. They've been moved around some taxonomically, before 40 or so years ago they were included with Aequidens. Some...

    Blue / Green Phantom

I've had multiples of each of the three, L128, L200 Hemiancistrus, and L200 Baryancistrus. Reportedly the northernmost L128 are the darkest and become somewhat lighter as you move south to where L200 Hemiancistrus take over and then become lighter themselves as you move even further south. In my...

    Possible instant cycle

When I do something of that nature my one precaution is to feed lightly at first, but I've done it multiple times without any issues.

Does anyone keep Geophagus Red Head Tapajos?

A few factors that might affect color: what size are they, what are you feeding them, what color sand (and background), how bright are the lights? Also, some these days aren't as colorful, apparently due to breeding.

Anyone ever seen a Dempsey with a nuchal hump?

I have been. :-) While that's true of most fish species (not just a certain niche) if translated to percentages surviving to become breeding adults or older, my point was it doesn't define the size limit of wild fish or prove that Aequidens in the wild can only reach 5 inches.

Anyone ever seen a Dempsey with a nuchal hump?

I can't say I've specifically researched this in science literature, but I suspect that (along with numbers of eggs produced) spawning age may tell you something about survival to adult rate, which is to say I suspect species that spawn at 6 months and half their adult size likely have lower...

Anyone ever seen a Dempsey with a nuchal hump?

That's often the case, the percentage of older, large fish is relatively small and some locations have larger specimens of a species than others. But that was my point, exactly, average wild size doesn't define a size limit for wild fish. I've seen this all the time fishing. For example, I did...

Anyone ever seen a Dempsey with a nuchal hump?

That's funny. A couple of days ago someone (else) told me JDs (among some other species) "tend to get eaten by things once they hit the 5" mark" as an argument that said species (including JDs) are mostly in the 5-6 inch range-- I could have gotten into a debate, but I was busy with more...

Aequidens Diadema quickly passing species max size?

Predation is a constant, not just "once they hit the 5" mark." There are a number of factors affecting wild vs captive fish size, not just predation, and a number of reasons the same species may vary in size from one location to another-- or, for that matter, from one tank to another.

Aequidens Diadema quickly passing species max size?

I've seen a number of sources list them small, 4 or 5 inches. The fishbase reference I see lists max size as 11.8 cm standard length, which would be nearer 5 inches not counting the caudal fin, so 6 or so inches total length. This is still on the small side-- Is it a matter of wild fish vs well...

What species of geo are these ?

I was going to say-- doesn't mean no one could tell from those photos, Kevin's one of the guys I'd trust, but for me I'd feel better seeing them settled in a tank. Faded bars, faded spots or cheek marks, small fish not showing a cheek mark yet, some photos are tricky and I've seen a lot of bad...

What species of geo are these ?

A couple do look a bit different in the bags, but it's easy to get fooled that way and I hate to judge by that, especially with fish as similar as geos can be; some are really hard to distinguish, especially as young fish. But yes, from the same perfect parents I've had occasionally imperfect...

What species of geo are these ?

Don't necessarily disagree. :) Don't know where you got them, but some vendors I'd trust close to 100% on species IDs, others somewhat less. So I won't say they can't be mixed, it can happen reportedly with exports of dicrozoster, abalios, and similar species, since the cheek marks can come and...

What species of geo are these ?

Less than ideal trying to ID them in the bag, but they look like winemilleri to me-- horizontally marked tails turning into stripes, plus the dark preopercular mark-- or if not, a similar looking, cheek marked species like proximus (on the other hand the cheek mark rules out pyrocephalus or...

Agree. I kept meaning to mention this. The less junk reaching the bio media the better, which is why some filters are set up backwards with the fine pads last in line. I regularly rinse bio media, always have-- directly under the faucet in my last two homes with well water (adding up to 30...

I understand. Different situation there, not always easy to keep some of the larger fish taken for granted in some other places, but people make it work. That's the thing with an international forum, you can't always impose what you're used to on everyone else. :-)

    Media quantity

Just about perfect and I agree on media. People sometimes quote his 'aquarium science' blog as though it was the Encyclopedia Britannica. It's not. It's the opinions of one aquarist, a former chemist, who has done his share of reading on the subject, but is not a biologist or aquaculture...

Where would you place the tank in this room? Wife and I disagree

Small world. I went to Hibbard grades 2-6, Von Steuben grade 7, then we moved. The autographs disappeared over time, unfortunately, like the hundreds of baseball cards I had, not that I knew they'd be worth anything. Don't remember exactly, but seems to me they didn't make the move to Oak Lawn...
