    Insectivore Diet for Chalceus

Ohhh.. you don't have a dedicated fish fridge - freezer? Most fish keepers I know have one for their medication and food storage in their fish room. Even a dead fridge makes a great rodent proof insulated container. You could buy a deep bucket - bin to open the boxes in. And a plastic bag for...

How cold could an alligator gar survive in?

It's not just the minimum temperature to be mindful of. Even cold water fish can't handle large temperature fluctuations in a short time. So if your autumn or spring season gets a wide daily temperature range especially if you only have 5000 - 10000 gallons then consider a heater until the cold...

    Thoughts on extruded aluminium stands?

Go with whichever makes you comfortable and looks best (to you). If not a Saltwater tank, I'd use steel as this will reduce the number of legs (even if not visible) and the tank can be easily shifted with a pallet trolley or hydraulic car jack.

    Insectivore Diet for Chalceus

I don't think you can get better than live fresh crickets. Why don't you freeze them ?

    650 Glass Build and leak

For a tank of this size (depth) you require structural grade silicone. Generally this is mentioned in the products technical specification sheet and equates to >30 MPa tensile shear so it's not surprising the DAP failed. I had a quick look at ASI Aquarium Silicone which has about 3 MPa tensile...

Question about moving with fish cross country

Direct flight is definitely easier on the fish. If your not confident on self bagging fish to IATA (airline transport) standards then visit a competent KOI establishment to see if they have a packing or shipping service. They will be accustomed to shipping large (biomass) valuable fish safely...

    Bulk cabomba for free?

Cabomba is a serious pest weed in many countries most probably including yours. Here is some information on how to control and kill it. https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/biosecurity/weeds/weed-control/management-guides/cabomba-control-manual

    Stainless steel rim

You could extend the tank sides up another 8 inches and put the cross braces up there out of sight and out of the way So no stainless steel rim required. Another suggestion is it will be much cheaper and structurally stronger to use epoxy coated steel over stainless. Also easier to weld for...

    RTC behaviour

Your overfeeding. Predatory fish only need 2 feeds a week. Just because it will eat daily doesn't mean it needs to. The majority of its poo will be undigested food. Especially if it gets a tummy bulge. Also faster growth equates to shorter life span.

Looking for feedback on a potential solid hardwood build.

Have you considered building an all glass tank and cladding it with hardwood? The tank size is not particularly big or difficult. That's much more reliable and faster. As your cladding, you can use smaller (joined) glass pieces and thinner simpler hardwood.

    Will the tank fit

Say you have an 8 x 2 x 2 tank and you want to replace this with a wider tank but your door is only 2.5 foot wide. Just add an 8 x 2 tank extension onto your first tank to create an 8 x 4 x 2 foot tank. You would need to cut this extension off when it's time to move but it's only silicone.

What are Your Dream Tank Setups?

This layout below is nice and relatively simple to achieve. I've seen fast riverbed versions with waterfalls and rocky cascades using endless loops from high volume pumps too. Distressingly I've also seen this flooded house in Thailand. Similar but so different!

    Will the tank fit

As space is tight, don't build a mock-up tank that is flexible, even thin wood will move too much. Ask me how I know... If your existing stands are steel or correctly build wood, is very simple to move them around with a hydraulic car jack and several small platform trolleys. Invest in low...

    Lid workarounds

I used to use 12mm glass lids with 50mm feeding holes. And 2kg sand in zip lock bags to hold down thinner lids (the sand won't break lids when crashing down from airborne) but hard lids does promote drop eye. My worst experience was one aro cracking a 6mm glass lid which let the fish get...

    Lid workarounds

Posting as an experienced silver arowana breeder; That netting you have will catch their teeth when they jump. It's annoying when they dry out a few centimetres away from water. I have best success with a tee-pee frame of PVC pipe and fine mosquitoe net as this let's them "roll" back into water...

How many MTS snails are too many?

It only takes one MTS to jam a pump impeller and if you have a reasonable size fish room, they will colonise pipework, bottom drains, overflows. It doesn't take many snails to quickly multiply enough to affect water velocity and flow rates.

Looking for feedback on a potential solid hardwood build.

Hardwood is more expensive, more difficult to work with and handles moisture worse than plywood. I build my first fish room racks from hardwood and despite sealing them well, they would warp - twist and bow especially if weight changed. If your set on making a hardwood tank, the best advice I...

    Planet Catfish Disappeared

I am a regular visitor to PC. I suspect the site has been hacked, Jools may have been locked out. Hopefully this gets resolved soon and there are backups to restore from. Disturbingly, it would not take much for malicious code - malware or virus to be written into the landing page. This would...

    Acrylic/Glass thickness calculator

Hello Zazikato, Glass is sold by it's area so the price of a 10m x 2m sheet is the same price as 4 pieces of 2.5m x 2m sheets. However for a first time DIY built tank, having several smaller sheets allows more flex along the tank length and is simpler - cheaper logistics for transport and...
