Looks like an african or tilapia that's just messed up from living in a hot spring. I'm sure the water quality isn't great in there and there is quite a bit of sulfur and other chemicals in there.

How are you dosing CO2? In my experience, I've had cyano outbreaks when my co2 levels fluctuate, but I'm in college and have a completely inadequate diy setup on my 110. If you have a pressurized system this shouldn't be a problem.

The green and white one needs to have the leaves out of the water in order to survive more than a couple months. If you could tell us what kind of lights you have it would help us tell you what plants you can use.

I have always been a fan of the silk plants as opposed to the plastic ones, but some plastic plants do end up looking pretty good. Just shy away from any really cheap ones and ones with un-natural colors and you will have a nice looking tank. It also helps to clump 2 or 3 of the same plant...

I'm not really sure about those, but why don't you just build a sump? Probably would be about the same price as another canister filter but you would have so much more space for media and can hide your heaters.

Should work well, I believe some people use them for this very reason. The high water movement will polish the water quick but may clog the filter rapidly if you only have a polishing pad in there.
