New look for my Poly tank

Good looking start. Just a note on the java fern, if you bury the rhizome (the horizontal root) it will rot. You only want the black roots to go under the substrate.

New to Polypterus keeping- Photos and questions

I didn't have luck with Angels. They liked to pick at the polys fins. I've kept buffalo head and Egyptian mouthbrooders successfully for many years.

New to Polypterus keeping- Photos and questions

You can easily fit more smaller species in there if you want. 5-6 should do fine together. You can also add other fish for some different levels of movement. Ctenopoma mix great with polys. African Butterflyfish are good surface dwellers. Lots of other fish will work as well.

    favorite food for bichir

Fresh fish eggs send my polys nuts. My big ornate shoots out as soon as they hit the water and snags them within seconds.

    Lap missing an eye

One of my laps has been with one eye for the last 7 years or so. It was definitely another bichir that did it, as that was the only tankmates. Most likely had her head grabbed while going for food. I wouldn't rule out a BGK. They are nasty buggers that will eat anything that can fit in their...

    is it worth it?

Honestly, in an area with that population, that is a ridiculous price for an ornate that size. A full grown ornate should be almost half that price there. If you don't mind growing your own, look into ordering from Spencer Jack. As long as you get a few people to order, the shipping is dirt...

How has your Bichirscaping changed over the years? Pics pls before and after.

That would be the bacteria in the filter that convert ammonia and nitrite. Plants use ammonia directly and use it for growth. There is no converting it into different forms of nitrogen.

Senegal has started eating tank mates.

I can never recall seeing a single person recommend a cory for a bichir tank on this forum. Many advise against the addition of plecos, but never to add cories.

What catfish would go well with bichirs???

I've had over 15 species of syno with my bichirs for the past 15 years or so. I've never seen any of them show the slightest interest in a bichir yet. I'm not saying it isn't possible, but I haven't seen it. I don't personally consider a bichir tank complete without a syno.

    Are these Ornates?

What? 15"? Not even close. Most lower jaws are in the 24" plus range and ornate, weeksi and teugelsi all should hit anywhere from 18-24" or larger.

    What would you buy?

I got it from an online store we do group buys through all the time. In the past year he has had oranges, dels, teugelsi, laps, sens, endlis and ansorgii all in the 2.5-4" range.
