UK Newbie here, am I choosing the right equipment? Help!

Nice to hear things are coming together. First off, I find skimmers as a necessity, because of their ability to pull all that gunk from a tank (you'd be surprised - just google image some of the stuff that comes out). Despite that, many don't jump to the same conclusions, and the major problem...

UK Newbie here, am I choosing the right equipment? Help!

Welcome to the salt life, and congrats on doing your research. What I'm going to highly suggest is a protein skimmer - it will benefit your tank and keep it very clean. They typically act as the "filter," so I don't usually run external or hob filters of any sort on a salt setup. Otherwise your...

Newb here. whats a good fish for me?

Before you make your mind on something, I'd suggest considering a sperm whale. Jk, but I'd recommend a toby puffer like a leopard puff (http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=15+39+2909&pcatid=2909) or something like a valentini. But if you want a true psychotic killer, invest...

Questions about setting up Saltwater Tank.

@Otherone haha good catch meant to say that the bacteria on the rock eats up nitrites and converts them to nitrates. And yeah fish fingers has it down... bac eats up little bits of phosphates and nitrates. But otherwise otherone, wasn't sure what you were getting at in your post. Did you mean...

    150g Predator Tank

Sick tank! I was just about to say; your undy will kill every living thing in that tank when she gets a lill bigger. Good choice on the swap; undulates are the bastards of the reefs. But that tuskfish (aussie by the looks of it) looks real nice! Keep us filled on your tank; it's beautiful.

Questions about setting up Saltwater Tank.

Okay I hope this post will be able to clear things up; 1) If you're looking at a ray/shark tank, expect to be upgrading FAST. Your 100 gallon isn't enough for any of the species of sharks or rays. This leads me to point 2. 2) No rock is a BAD idea. You may be able to save space but the rock has...

    new to marine

Hey welcome to MFK and 'the dark side.' Seems like you read up well; you know what you're talking about. One thing you didn't talk about for sump design was a protein skimmer; when it comes to equipment, I'd say the skimmer is the most important (after the necessities like water, flow, etc)...

Not another tank setup thread lol...

So are you asking whether you should do a 40 gallon salty or your original new tank as a salty? If that's the question; hands down I'd go with your original idea, more water = more room for margin of error = learning without killing anything. Also you get to keep much more fish (and often more...

Good to hear everything's working out. And check the specs of your house, such a large tank usually weighs in at quite a lot - so be sure your wall can support it.

    "Cold" Marine tanks.

I've had a friend down in aussie land (australia) who has a temperate tank with native cowfish, starfish etc. Makes me very jealous, but more of an excuse to move to aussie land someday. He used a protein skimmer and a wet dry if I'm not mistaken... I'll ask him for you.

    6 gallon seahorse tank?

mm... thats really tight. Water variables can vary a lot in just a 6 gallon, and seahorses need really clean water. But based on previous experience, that might work.

    Protein Skimmers

for hob go with reef octopus B-whatever you need; good price, works well, etc for serious (expensive) skimming, go deltec hob And then theres bubble king for in sump; absolute beast (but expensive). Other expensive alts are ATB and vertex alpha.

Startin' to look good! The rock is also doing well. What are you planning on having in the tank?

    FO 120 gallon?

@fishman112 I'd say aim for 0.5-1 pound per gallon (60-120 pounds) so I'd go like 75 and see how the rock looks, if you want more add more, want less, take out a bit. And otherone; Great points - I'm sure many are familiar with tank crashes when they suddenly stop dosing vodka, although I've...
