    DIY aquaponics ?

The smaller systems seem to be much easier to get going. I have had a hell of a time doing one for my pond but I do have an indoor one on my 125g tank. Right now the larger system is idle and I use the pond to irrigate an in the ground garden.

Anyone else view thier fish keeping as therapy?

Started into bigger fish for the first time after my wife's first miscarriage. Seemed therapeutic for both of us. Now that we have 3 kids and another on the way she's mostly moved to watching while I still take care of them. For me it's now a nice break from the hustle and bustle of the busy...

How often do you guys wash filters?

@ duanes, that's what a settling chamber is for. There's a pre-filter in my overflow, then it trickles over biomedia, then a settling chamber which I do clean with every water change, then the polishing mechanical media. Bio media itself is always clean.

Need Help Designing Sump for My Twin Tanks

Are you going to build a cover over the sump? Typically that's where you want things to get clean rather than the other way around. So I'd recommend a removable cover to protect it from anything that might fall in. Also what exactly are you needing help with, you seem to have tank, sump and...

How often do you guys wash filters?

I tend to clean the mechanical media in my 125 every water change, if I'm lazy every other. But If I'm changing the water due to high nitrates, it makes sense to clean out the mechanical and clear out those nitrates at the same time. I of course never clean the bio media, but that's in a...

    Overflow Box Question

No experience with the model, but I like the built in siphon tube and the idea of black acrylic to reduce algae (a common problem with my overflow). I'd definitely go with the 300D as they always tend to over-estimate gph so you'd be safer with the larger model. It is ironic though that both...

*"That's not suppose to happen!" Experience swap thread*

Secure lid means Secure lid! and keep it quiet! Several of my tropical fish are overwintering in my 125g tank, I was moving a computer out of the den when I dropped the keyboard. These being used to the pond instantly swam away from the noise... In an 18 foot round pond that's fine. But in a 18...

    Self renewing food source pond?

I think there are several on here that run aquaponics. I do in the summer time in my pond with some hanging gardens, but I don't eat the fish...considering how carp taste I don't think koi would taste all that good. lol In the winter time there aren't alot of plants that stay alive, though...

nitrate creep.. you guys should read this

most on mfk do water changes on a schedule for convenience. This actually points out that a better method would be to simply do one when the tank goes above our desired level of nitrates. This of course requires daily testing, which is likely why we all did the scheduled water change in the...

A Tribute to the Under Gravel Filter..

actually in aquaponics you don't really change the water, you top it off. The nitrates are taken care of by the plants/produce. Since the nitrates are kept in check the little top off's are all that's necessary to replenish nutrients. The system acts similar to nature. The river analogy is off...

    Netting large fish

Just last week I had to go out to my backyard pond to get the tropicals out for the winter (been pretty warm in AZ) Oscar?, check caught him sunning (a good indicator that it was time) two 21" common plecos? check caught them on the side. 8" JD? had to drain the pond into the alley until there...

    Using Jack Dempsey's as dithers/fillers?

JD's don't seem to match the temperament for dithers. Though I'm not entirely sure that's what you're looking for. You seem to be wanting an agression buffer whereas dithers are typically used to coax timid fish out of their hiding places.

    580 Gallon Tank Filters

larger sumps can add more water to the system reducing the frequency of top offs. Otherwise what the above posters said is correct better media beats bigger sumps. Of course if you're more of an "AND" type of person you can go larger sump AND better media.

Ever had a fish that just didn't want to leave.

I typically transport fish in buckets or containers with lids with a small hole just big enough for an airhose which hooks up to a battery powered air pump. Even with jumpers I've yet to have one be able to take off a lid.
